It's fair to say that after being down 3 years and having Dexter dog, 3 cats, 2 humans and numerous visitors walking on them, our lounge carpet is beginning to look and smell a bit worn. Add to that mix, general spills and general dirt and you've got one carpet which is in need of general freshening up every so often. As I use 1001 carpettrouble shooter on a regular basis, I decided to try this 1001 No Vac Foam Carpet Freshener instead of our usual Shake n Vac. The fragrance I am reviewing is Summer Flowers.
I chose this because it promised you didn't have to vacuum up after using it, which is what you have to do with Shake n Vac. I don't always want to vacuum, so this promised to be the ideal solution for a lazy lady like me. I didn't buy for the packaging but if you are interested, the can is mostly yellow, with the 1001 logo and a blue push down cap sprayer. There is a picture of flowers along the bottom.
I was also impressed that I could also use this on my chairs as it is suitable for upholstery
too. Ideal when you have a 16 year old doddery cat who simply sits on a chair all day dribbling and despite how many times I put a towel down for him, he always rejected it in favour of the seat cushion.

Other fragrances available: Spring Rain and Gentle Breeze.Price: ~~~~~ £1.95 for 300ml from Tesco
Directions for Use: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1. Shake can well 2. Hold upside down about 15" (38cm) from the carpet or upholstery 3. Press tab firmly whilst moving it in a sweeping side to side motion applying an even, light covering of foam to your carpet or upholstery. 4. You can see the foam working as it disappears. In about five minutes your carpet or upholstery is dry and refreshed with a pleasant fragrance.
My Experience ~~~~~~~~~~~~ I decided to use this after hoovering round. I had an area of carpet where my elderly cat had had an accident some months ago and despite washing the area, we couldn't quite shift the lingering smell, although it was not noticeable to anyone else, we were conscious of it. As directed I pressed the tab and light foam came out, it reminded me somewhat of fake foam you see on children's TV for pie in the face jokes. It did look somewhat insipid to me; I expected it to be thicker.
I continued to spray in a side to side motion and I covered an area about 1m squared. As I got to the end, which only took 2-3 minutes at the most, I noticed the foam where I had started had disappeared into my carpet completely; it was nowhere to be seen. I did also notice that towards the end of my spraying, I had a few clumpy lumps of foam come out of the can, I am not sure whether this is a product issue or whether my grip on the can and the push tab had become lighter and therefore not spraying out the foam as effectively. I'll point out though that these lumps of foam made no difference at all to the product performance.
Less and 2 minutes later the foam had all completely disappeared and surprisingly my carpet was bone dry, despite my expectation of this wouldn't be dry even after 5 minutes, so to me, this exceeded my expectations on this front.
After leaving the foam for a while (actually I probably got distracted by something else) I returned back to the spot of the former cat wee smell. I can honestly say that I could not smell cat wee at all, nor the traces of urea which seem to linger, despite cleaning it up thoroughly immediately afterwards. Instead, I got a sweet smell of berries and lavender, though not much in the way of flowers.
I was dubious as to how well this would last but after 3 weeks I could still vaguely smell the 1001 foam in the carpet but I couldn't smell the former smell of the carpet until about 4 and a half weeks after using the foam before it returned.
This did disappoint me a bit because I had been promised the product would eliminate odours and break down and destroy tough odours.
Despite giving several more applications, we have never got rid of the faint smell of urea completely, although we can keep it at bay with this spray, which is OK for us but may not be acceptable for others.
I have also used this on my armchairs and I have to report I got a much better result. We didn't have any predominant smells on our chairs, they were just in need of a general freshen up. I also was pleased with the time take to apply to a whole chair and I can report that in less than 5 minutes my armchairs were dry and my husband able to sit on them without moaning that they were wet.
Incidentally, the scent lasted a lot longer on my chairs than on my carpet, it was a good 7-8 weeks before the scent faded and even then, you couldn't detect any underlying odours, you just noticed the sweet smell of the foam had disappeared, so I do believe this did manage to break down the everyday odours ingrained in the chairs. I can only assume that some smells are just too tough for the foam to break down and it fairs better where there are no specific smells to break down.
Overall: ~~~~~~~
I am relatively pleased with the results I have had from the carpet foam. It is ideal if you need a quick freshen up before visitors come over or if you just want a quick fix for smelly rugs, carpets or chairs.
I did feel that on the odour I really wanted it to shift that I was left disappointed, it just couldn't cope with anything too tough but it did disguise the smell very well and for a decent period of time.
I would hesitate to agree that it does destroy odours, it did on my chairs but not on my carpet, so I wouldn't rely on this is you have a stubborn or worn in odour to try to remove, you may be better, in this case, trying something else, but if you are happy to disguise the smell continuously, then this is fit for purpose.
I have also yet to find any of the other fragrances aside from the Summer Flower fragrance, which is frustrating as I am beginning to find this particular fragrance a bit sickly now, after my third can.
Overall, I recommend this as a quick fix and for tackling minor ingrained smells but use something else for tough, ingrained odours.
