Written 35 years before the year of the title, this book is on the face of it a thoroughly gripping novel relating to a vision of the future, and how one man tries to buck the trend. However to describe it in this way is to sell it remarkably short. In some senses the book can be read as anti-Communist, but it goes much deeper than that, asking fundamental questions of society. Does the state have the right to take away individual powers? Is there anything we can do to stop this? Is there any place within society for someone who doesn't wish to conform? Spawning concepts such as Big Brother and Room 101, this is a classic in the truest sense, and acts as a warning not to give the state too much power so that things run out of control. Everyone should read this and take on board the message that it gives us, for the words still ring true today. A thoroughly good read!
