Orwell's book, written in the 40's, shows how he saw the world was going to turn out. By setting it in the future he criticised the society of the time, his message being that this was how the world was going to turn out if things continued the way they were. Thinking about the world at the time (just after events such as the rise of Hilter / Nazism and Mussolini and Stalin) it's hardly surprising he had such bleak predictions of the future. His depiction of a totalitarian system of government is frightening...what if it was really like that? The book is very well written, personally I find Orwell's style clever yet not difficult to read.
You can read this book just as a story, albeit a not very cheerful one! On you could, of course, go to the other extreme and get all paranoid about people reading your mind and being arrested for Thoughtcrimes. Or you could be somewhere in the middle and see it as an interesting comment on the world at the time, and a warning for future generations.
If you liked 1984 I would recommend Aldous Huxley's Brave New World, which similarly portrays a futuristic society, this time taking the mass production of the Ford car as its starting point, but again showing Huxley's criticism of the way society appears to be heading.
