I took advantage of their special offer the first 3 months half price, a home package with 1.5Gb space, 20Gb bandwidth and some nice little offerings. Having suddenly realised that I could bolt multiple domains onto this one package I decided to move my 4 .com and 3 .co.uk domains across. Before doing this I decided after 3 days that I needed to upgrade to the Business package (more webspace and bandwidth), simple click a button and away you go!
Being a sensible person I decided to ask the support whether I would be charged for the Home Package and the Business Package or whether one would cancel the other out. So I checked out the FAQs (wow a company that has FAQs that were written this century, sorry Lycos you really need to get up to the 21st Century), it all seems easy a few clicks and no extra charges. Not wanting to get caught out I decided to ask their telephone support, ah based in India, America who knows?
"Sorry sir you are not able to upgrade your package within a 3 month period so you cannot upgrade to the Business Pacakage" oh, deflated was I, so I went to read the small print, no mention of that little puppy in there, so I called back and again the same response, so I pointed out that your small print does not state this fact and I want to upgrade. The line goes quiet, "sir let me check with our billing team", after more time on hold "the billing team state that the computer system will not allow you to do it".
OK caution to the wind, been here before, some person dragged out of the local job centre and given a script to read all for a few pence per day. So I went to the control panel and upgraded, long story short don't believe what you are told on the phone, it is invariably wrong.
That niggle aside, I have to say the upsides here are:
- Simple but effective Control Pane - Nice range of free tools (photobooks, cgi, site builders, stats tools, etc) - Fast response - Domain transfer is a doddle (ooo look Fasthosts a section where the receiving registrar quotes the Auth Code) - Excellent cost saving
So this is the honeymoon period, but if a company can charge me £108 per year to host 4 .com domains and give me .co.uk domains free of charge then I am happy (compare to Lycos that would cost me at least 3 times that amount).
The support desk is the usual, but here's hoping I don't need to call them.
...well that has probably got your attention and although the title is a bit of a rhetorical remark, it is not without its relevance, but more of that later. First though a bit of a disclaimer. There are those who will think that this review, which as you will realise is about only one aspect of the company concerned, is a bit specialist and narrow in its scope. I did think that i should write this up for the cafe area pieces but then reconsidered ... ...to achieve by writing these articles and opinions. Although most reviews will extol the virtues of a product or service, I feel it is just as important that potential buyers are allowed to share in the experience of those who have been subjected to the down side of the product or service in question. No matter that the review covers a less than comprehensive evaluation, if one aspect is revealed to be a major problem then it should be made public, ...

Advantages: Hosting is fast & bullet-proof, decent webmail, suberb extras. Disadvantages: none
If you want to set-up your own website, there are plenty of free services such as "Geocities", "Angelfire" + whatever hosting space your ISP might throw in with your account.... but more often than not these don't allow you to run CGI or PHP scripts for running things like Messageboards, Guestbooks & chat (like if you're getting p*$$ed off at loosing free ones from other providers who've decided to start charging for their services from free to paid ... ...adverts on your sites like it's going out of fashion (which you'll probably have noticed doesn't do much for your website in the Aesthetics department).
That's where companies like "1&1 Internet" come in.

...of my business realtionship with 1 and 1 went very smooth to be fair. The online set up was very straight forward and their hosting packages were all priced very resonably.
What more could anyone ask for?
Well customer support would have been nice, but if you phone the help line they tell you to send an email but if you send an email you get an automated response. Not exactly the most perfect support.
Now the story gets very interesting. My account ... ...enough for me.
In the 1 and 1 control panel there was an optional expense notifier. Fantastic, I thought. I set my limit to £1 which would mean that I was able to run £1 worth of bandwidth over my limit. That seemed pretty reasuring to me.
Around 6 months later I hosted a video for a friend. Many of you may have seen it. The Esure 'Calm Down Dear' remix. The friend in question being the creator of the amazingly funny spin off of the not so funny ...

1 & 1 what an unusual name. Sort of makes you think dosen't it. Well don't. your supposed to be reading this review.
Ease of sign up is the biggest grab factor of the company. Take 10 - 15 minutes out of your day and bam you have signed yourself up for one of their hosting packages. The website is fairly clear about what package gives you what and prevents potential customers from being beaten to the floor with jargon. Also when a customer looks ... ...easy to use. You are asked to enter a domain name you fancy such as "headlesspie.co.uk" and it will then return if it is taken or not. In the event the address that you asked for is taken it will provide you with a list of alternate domains such as "headlesspie.com" , "headlesspie.org" and other domain subnets. This makes the site fairly easy to use, even to your complete novice.
The whole site even in the customer control area maintains a nice ...

Advantages: Superb Website, state of the art graphics Disadvantages: Almost everything else
...Not as many bells and whistles but it is cheap AND it works. Call center is superb and online help is always there. Everything I wanted and everything that 1and1 does not provide.
