There is no doubt the home crowd is a help as well as a hindrance for British athletes in London 2012, the favorites feeling the pressure and the outsiders over-performing after pulling from that crowd, as we saw in the gymnastics and the road race, to name but two. In the 2000 Olympics, Sydney the Great Britain swimming squad did not peform as well as most people would have hoped. The Americans and Australians, on the other hand dominated. This is because over here, in Britain swimming is not regarded highly as an exciting sport. Infact, as a swimmer myself, relays are fascinating to watch. Unlike running, swimming requires allover fitness, not just in the legs. The Australians are mad about the sport and fund it tremendously. Usually, as a British woman, I tend to watch the Olympics full of hope, but with that hope rarely fulfilled. The past Olympics from 1976 have been disappointing overall, with few star performances from the Great Britain team as a whole. This is not to say we haven't had any success - think of Daley Thompson, Tessa Sanderson, Steve Redgrave. But it seems to have been sparse & I usually tend to look back on a Games as a 'what might have been' for the GB team. england are SO terrible at the olymipcs i dont know how they did so well this year!!!!! i love sports and i think that more money shoud b invested in sport to stop other countries walking all over us as though we r stupid. something needs to b done as we r getting worse and worse. the government and lottery should stop messing about and give sport a chance WHOSE WITH ME!!!! we should give those athletes who r dying to get serious into sport but dont have the finances a chance and c what happens. ... more
