In 2nd Chance, a young girl is shot down on the steps of a San Francisco church, and ... more
Detective Lindsay Boxer decides that the time is right to reconvene the Women's Murder Club, the loosely-knit group that cracked a baffling mystery in James Patterson's earlier 1st to Die. Collaborating with assistant DA Jill Bernhardt, reporter Cindy Thomas and coroner Claire Washburn, Boxer is soon on the trail of a canny murderer who has the knack of making his trackers into his quarry. Boxer and the Women's Murder Club begin to believe that the killer might have been on the force, but his ultimate aims are unguessable--and the revelations in store shock them all. Patterson is the maestro behind such winners as Cat and Mouse and Roses are Red, but his Alex Cross books are familiar territory for readers. His new team, however, are individually characterised with great skill, and though the short time we spend with each of them forces concision on the author--and his mysterious co-writer Andrew Gross's--part, the customary skills are all brought into play in this diverting mystery. It's always a gamble for an author who has established a highly successful series with one much-loved protagonist to inaugurate a new one with fresh characters but The Women's Murder Club has all kinds of possibilities and chances are will prove a formidable force. --Barry Forshaw

Background of author:
James Patterson is one of the biggest selling authors alive today, repeatedly hitting the bestsellers lists with every new book released. His other credentials include coming up with a slogan for Toys R’ Us.
He has collaborated with a number of co authors on his books, including Maxine Paetro, Andrew Gross and in this book, Michael Ledwidge. Andrew gross has now gone on from co authoring to release his own book, \'the blue zone\', which largely follows in the footsteps of Patterson. James\' Alex Cross series is one of the biggest selling series\' of all time.
Main Plot of book:
After the events of the first book, Lindsay is unsure if she can carry on her duties as a detective. But when a little girl is shot dead outside a church, she knows she must put back the women’s murder club and solve the case.
Joining up once more with reporter Cindy Thomas, assistant district attorney Jill Bernhardt, and medical examiner Claire Washburn, also her best friend, the women’s murder club start looking for a killer who is turning his pursuers into his victims.
My opinion:
I only started reading the women’s murder club series after buying 1st to die with a book voucher, and after becoming engrossed in the story carried on by purchasing this next.
To be able to really understand all the characters and their individual situations, I really recommend you read the books in order, so start with 1st to die. However, James Patterson does go back over past events to try make it accessible to anyone.
These books really aren’t a touch on the Alex Cross detective series, but offer a good alternative read. The books may possibly be liked more by women due to the whole basics of the series being told by women etc, though as a man I read and enjoyed the series and know of other men who have too.
This has some similarities to the Alex Cross series, in that in most books the killers become serial killers and there are some pretty gruesome murders, however on the other hand the Alex Cross series has been made into movies, while this has only been turned into a television series, yet to be released.
This is only a short read; it was over for me after a day’s reading and I was quite hooked on the book yet not as hooked as other books by James Patterson. This is a good summer read and put together with the rest of the series makes a good series, just don’t expect too much new material. If you have read most of James Patterson’s books you may find this too similar to other books.
Overall the book is a good read for when you have a spare day to kick back. The main interesting thing for me is that it is a mainly women’s book written by a man, yet he has managed to capture the emotions of the women well. The 1st book did well to draw me in and feel some emotion for the characters, mainly Lindsay Boxer, and this second book carries on with a few more twists and plenty more murders. Do not be put off by the title ‘women’s murder club’ if you are a man, because it is not soppy and is well worth a read.
Book Details:
RRP: £6.99 paperback Pages: 401 paperback Number of books in series: 6
This book is the sequel to 1st to Die which ended with the heroine, San Francisco cop Lindsey Boxer, in despair at the death of her lover and on the verge of suicide. If you’ve read the first book you know what the Women’s Murder Club is, for those who haven’t it’s a group of Lindsey’s friends who are loosely connected to crime (a DA, a journalist, a medical examiner) who share their thoughts on Lindsey’s case as an aid to solving it. It’s an interesting ... ...crime at hand. Lindsey uses them again to solve the current case, which begins with a seemingly random killing. As the murders progress however it gradually becomes clear that they are all linked.
It’s very difficult to write about any book to balance one’s opinion on how it’s written and give readers an idea of the storyline without giving the whole plot away, which I don’t want to do. With this book it’s particularly difficult because the plot ...

Advantages: Good read, a woman as the main character Disadvantages: Finishes too quickly
This is yet again another great book from James Patterson. It makes a change to have a woman as the main character and I think that makes the book more appealing to female readers and also a bit more believable!?
This is the follow up to 1st To Die where you were first introduced to Lindsay Boxer.
Lindsay, is San Francisco's only female homicide detective and she makes her comeback in this explosive follow up in the Murder Club Series.
After the ... ...whether she is returning to the same field of work, but suddenly a little girl is shot outside a San Francisco church, and Lindsay knows that this is her calling. She works with a reporter Cindy Thomas, DA Jill Bernhardt and medical examiner Claire Washburn.
Lindsay starts to track the mysterious killer who is quickly turning his pursuers into his victims.
A series of further murders makes them all think that this is an police person, the clues ...

Advantages: Page turner! Plot changes, fast paced Disadvantages: They are never as good as the original (1st to die) :P
Here's the second Women's Murder Club mystery (after the splendid 1st to Die). Let's get this out of the way up front: there may be a co-writer listed on the cover - Gross has apparently worked with Patterson before, as a researcher - but you won't find any sign of him inside. From start to finish, the book reads like pure Patterson. I suspect the co-author credit was a last-minute addition to the book: the uncorrected galley circulated for review ... ...has only Patterson's name; the copyright page mentions only Patterson; and, on the back cover, Gross's name doesn't appear anywhere. All right, enough of that. Let's talk about the book. Well, the premise of this series is rather implausible: San Francisco homicide detective Lindsay Boxer gets together with her friends - a newspaper reporter, an assistant district attorney, and a medical examiner - to solve the cases that her own police department ...

2nd Chance by James Patterson
This is the second novel by James Patterson and co written with Andrew Gross involving the Women’s Murder Club.
The first book ended with Lindsay in despair over the death of her lover and the illness that was trying to kill her. But Lindsay Boxer is back as the first Women Lieutenant of the San Francisco Homicide Squad. The novel opens with a shooting at a church in a predominantly black area of San Francisco killing ... ...the serial killer but it is the first of note to the Homicide Squad. There is a killer on the loose who wants to kill black cops or those involved with black cops. The storyline is involved and I didn’t want to put it down. This gives you an inside into Lindsay’s personal life and a better understanding of her personality and how she grew up with a father who left her mother when he was needed most and how when her father comes back into her life ...
