..., although there are various ways that you can go about things.
If you just want to hook up two PC's for a bit of head to head gaming you can use a standard parallel or serial cable which fits between any two PC's. You can then run a program that comes with Windows called direct cable connection and you should be able to access each others PC's and more importantly, play games. In reality I have always found direct cable connection a little hit and miss, working when and if it feels like it.
For more than one PC you are going to need some extra kit for your PC, what are known as Network cards (or NICs - Network Interface Cards). There are all sorts of different cards, cables and ways to network depending on what, and how fast you want to do things. The most common types of card are 10/100 combo cards, which offer a circular (BNC) slot for 10...

Advantages: Reliable Disadvantages: Nothing special
...3Com Card
This card is a nice card but when it come to networking cads there is only two things that make a difference one being the speed, you only tend to find three types of network card all at various speeds ranging form 10 mbps then you get a 10/100 mbps and just recently you can now get hold of a 10/100/1000mbps cars that can use any of these three standards.
The card in question will only run at either ten mega bits per second or one hundred mbps depending on you other hard ware so this is something to keep in mind when buying this card. If you are using a Rj45 Crossover network cable linking two machines directly and both cards will work a 10/100 then you will receive a speed of 100mbps but if the other card in the other machine is only running a 10mbps you will only get speed of 10mbps the speed of the slowest card.

Advantages: Reduce TCO Disadvantages: not really for home use
...3Com's excellent network interface card (NIC)certainly cuts the mustart especially for the desktop. It gives 10Mbps over CAT 3, 4 or 5, and 100Mbps for CAT 5. It has the usual RJ45 and BNC connections for ethernet networks. Installation is a dream especially on plug and play operating systems. For the network management freaks among you it has :-
1) Performance Management
2) Network Management (over switched networks)
3) Remote Wake Up (RWU)
4) Desktop Management capabilities.
Overall the card is extremely reliable and robust.
Advantages: Reduce TCO, Easy installation
Disadvantages: could be too costly for the home user...
