Advantages: Reduce TCO Disadvantages: not really for home use
...3Com's excellent network interface card (NIC)certainly cuts the mustart especially for the desktop. It gives 10Mbps over CAT 3, 4 or 5, and 100Mbps for CAT 5. It has the usual RJ45 and BNC connections for ethernet networks. Installation is a dream especially on plug and play operating systems. For the network management freaks among you it has :-
1) Performance Management
2) Network Management (over switched networks)
3) Remote Wake Up (RWU)
4) Desktop Management capabilities.
Overall the card is extremely reliable and robust.
Advantages: Reduce TCO, Easy installation
Disadvantages: could be too costly for the home user...

Advantages: Easy and saves you PCI slots Disadvantages: Expensive
...Hello.. this is my first opinion on uk.ciao.com ... now this is one of the most usefull grey boxes on that scale i have ever seen ! Because of the sililarites between LAN and ISDN connections they can both use the same wire, RJ45, and so £com created a card which would not only serv as your ocnnection to the internet via and ISDN line... But AT THE SAME TIME communicate with the other computers on the network. This is ideal for Internet connection sharing as the information requested can be instantley picked up from the card and sent back to other remote computers as the internet connection is in the same place !! It is expensive but.. good !!...

..., you cannot stack anything on top of it, and you cannot stand it on edge.
There is a very good set up on the accompanying CD which install optional management software. The CD can also be used to set up all client PC’s on the network but you can do it all manually in a very short time anyway if you know what you are doing. The Lan Modem includes a DHCP server to assign IP addresses to lan clients which makes set up painless.
~Internet sharing~
Set up is a piece of cake. If you have set up the Lan in the first place, then this will take no more than a few minutes. 3Com say you can do it in 15 mins – this is probably about right.
Configuration of the Lan Modem is through a web browser interface – you simply type in the address of the LanModem (192.168.1.1 is the default) and then, subject to a password, access the set up...
