...Recently Ive become involved in an armature computer games event which means my computer is oft used for high peen LAN games I felt it might be worth increasing the network speed a bit by upgrading the network card.
Generic Network interface cards (NICs) seem to have taken over recently however I always have a soft spot for 3com's card the 10/100 3c905 range was the among the most stable fast range of PCI interface cards ever I thought I would try out the new breed of card.
I bought my card "new" from ebay for £10 plus delivery, generic 1000mb card can be bought for around this price new from most PC resellers.
The Package

The package arrived sealed in a 3com cardboard box inside which was the NIC in a plastic wrapping the driver cdrom and a warranty manual. It also had a brief guide swing how to insert the card...

...in a network!
The idea of a network is simple, although the practicalities of setting one up can be a little harder! A network connects a number of computers together, allowing them to share information and resources. This means that you can share things like printers, and CD-ROM drives, of if one person has some files that another person wants they can be transferred across the network.
Of course, networks are of great importance in places like offices, where a central server can be linked to a number of workstations. The server holds all the information, so that any user can access their work from any workstation. The internet is just a massive version of a smaller network, but what I'm concerned with here is a network called a LAN, which is used for home/office use and is what we use to play games over!
The kit you need is pretty simple...

All get connected Review of3Com OfficeConnect Dual 56K LAN Modem - routerby
Twigsby
Advantages: Fast shared internet access Disadvantages: See op
.... Yes, this is a DUAL modem device – there are two modem cables – but you have to buy another adapter to connect to a BT socket. I checked with 3Com tech support – apparently they deliberately only ship one adapter. How dumb is that?
Secondly the pass through telephone sockets do not seem to work properly –you cannot connect the modem to the phone socket and then put an ordinary phone/fax etc on the other end of the line by passing it through the lan modem. Tech support are baffled.
Thirdly the fax software Again, tech support are baffled.
Fourthly it is not always stable – I have several occasions where the Lan Modem’s internal server has crashed. This occurs most often when using P2P software (eg Bearshare and other Gnutella clones). Fortunatley this does not seem to prevent internet access from...
