Manufacturer's product description
The company that brought you smart network interface cards presents its latest innovation: secure, intelligent NIC processing. 3Com EtherLink and EtherLink Server 10/100 PCI network interface cards with 3XP processor work in tandem with servers, desktops, and workstations to provide unprecedented performance, intelligence, and LAN security. This generation of Fast Ethernet NIC is uniquely optimized for Windows 2000 to reduce CPU utilization and enhance performance by off-loading TCP/IP networking tasks from the host system to the NIC's onboard 3XP processor. Running cycle-intensive IPSec encryption algorithms, TCP segmentation, and TCP/IP checksum operations on the NIC's 3XP processor and encryption chip delivers secure, reliable connections while maximizing system performance. The 3XP processor in this powerful NIC takes offloading one step further by offloading the TCP segmentation process from the host CPU to the NIC. Offloading this function further accelerates system processing and improves application response times. The 3XP processor and encryption chip work in tandem to accelerate the processing of IPSec encryption algorithms. You no longer have to make a choice between system performance and protection for sensitive data. With the 3CR990 family, implementation of end-to-end LAN security is practical and easy.
...in a network!
The idea of a network is simple, although the practicalities of setting one up can be a little harder! A network connects a number of computers together, allowing them to share information and resources. This means that you can share things like printers, and CD-ROM drives, of if one person has some files that another person wants they can be transferred across the network.
Of course, networks are of great importance in places like offices, where a central server can be linked to a number of workstations. The server holds all the information, so that any user can access their work from any workstation. The internet is just a massive version of a smaller network, but what I'm concerned with here is a network called a LAN, which is used for home/office use and is what we use to play games over!
The kit you need is pretty simple...

...as lasting, after the installation and the installation what both rather quickly and simply went, to this day, had never to open my computer because of this card I it works faultlessly to this day.
I use it for my small network, what consists of three computers or if friends come to the gamble to me.
Up till now I didn't as said have any problems with it yet and I think I am also absolutely satisfied with their speed who already needs a 1000 Mbit card at home, then?
So nothing bad gives to report, I have used it for my DSL once a while, too and it worked and harmonized faultlessly also there, I really only can recommend it if spare one extra card, one of the good manufacturer 3COM then.

Advantages: Better than a hub, Well priced Disadvantages: Only 5 ports, yet another damn power adapter!
...Ok, there is probably no more technical info I could squeeze in here that RobAnt hasn't already stated (great op RobAnt), so this is just going to be based on my views from using the product.
Until recently, I was using a (rather decent) 3Com OfficeConnect 8 port 10BaseT hub to connect all of the equipment together I use at home. I don't really have great demands, I have a file / mail / internet access server, a web development server, a desktop PC (or 2) and a laptop.
My main requirement is shared internet access for all of the desktop PCs, laptop and mail server, and also a central file location to store my work, as I do use more than one PC for a project. I also have a printer hanging off the back of my file server as well, so all machines can print.
The 3Com hub is excellent, fully managed with lots of blinking flashing lights...
