Advantages: Simple, dual speed, small size Disadvantages: Only 5 ports (?)
Not much to say about this really. I bought this for a pound (!) on Ebay to connect to my router giving me 4 more ethernet ports to connect stuff to my network. That's all it does, gives you more connection; there's no firewall, DCHP, nothing, but then that's all in my router.
Its 5 autosensing ports (Ethernet 10Base-T/100Base-TX - RJ-45)automatically detect the speed of the attached device to maximize network performance - with a data transfer rate of up to 100 Mbps.
It really was a "plug-and-play" installation with no configuration needed, it connected straight into my network - I didn't even ned to read the manual ! The auto-sensing feature means that you can plug the "in" cable into any socket - another 3Comswitch I have has a specific "in" port.
It's nice and small (Weight 0.6 kg, Height 4.2 cm, depth 13.5 cm, Width 22.8 ...
Advantages: So Easy installation, Simple and effective design Disadvantages: None of which I know
GENERAL OVERVIEW
This 3COMOfficeConnectswitch is considered my best. It has simple yet effective design and so easy to use and configure: just plug the cables and it is on. It is very useful for home networks and small business networks, as it can connect up to 5 computers with the 10/100 Mbits per second speed.
FEATURES
Five autosensing ports automatically detect the speed of the attached device to maximize network performance
With plug-and-play installation and no configuration needed, the switch fits easily into your unmanaged network
Full-duplex feature supports two-way data transfer, doubling the effective bandwidth of the network
Compact, fanless design ensures quiet operation in small office spaces
Connectors at rear help reduce cable clutter
FCC Class B switch is approved for use in small office and home office ...
Advantages: Cheap, reliable, simple to use Disadvantages: None.
about anything other than configuring the devices themselves.
I would recommend this switch to anyone who has a few machines on their home or small office network, that way you can upgrade the speed critical machines on your network to gigabit speeds. I bought my two to allow me to use one with my media server and file server, and the other in my living room to connect the laptop, XBOX and so on... By having a gigabitswitch, it allowed my machines with gigabit ethernet cards to network at full speed with each other, so that transferring video and large files between them was not constrained to hundred megabit speeds you find with most home and home office networks.
I think the 5 portswitch is pitched at the right price, and has the right number of ports for the average home user who will usually have one or two computers and a games ...

Manufacturer's product description
Small offices can be demanding environments too. The 3Com OfficeConnect Gigabit Switch 8 is designed for small or remote branch offices that need to run bandwidth-intensive video or multimedia applications, and connect to high-speed servers or a high-speed network backbone. Use it to upgrade an existing hub or switch when you get a high-requirement Gigabit speed workstation and you'll be able to continue servicing your other connections at their current speeds. And you'll be ready for the future. The eight-port gigabit switch is powerful, as well as reliable and simple to install and operate. Plug-and-play convenience means the switch works right out of the box with no configuration or management required. Each of the eight non-blocking, autosensing 10/100/1000 ports automatically adjusts to the speed of network devices communicating at 1000, 100, or 10 Mbps, so the switch can accommodate a range of workgroup applications. Additional features such as a clipping system for easier physical stacking, 802.1p traffic prioritization, and auto MDI/MDIX on every port make this economical switch a real networking value.
