If you know me, you will know that I suffer from migraines and headaches on an all too frequent basis. So when a new ‘miracle cure’ comes along, I’m sure to be one of the first to buy it. Anything for a better quality of life as my migraines really are debilitating.
So I saw these adverts on the Tube/Underground for this new treatment called 4head, a pun on the word forehead, where headaches tend to strike most. I thought, hmm that’s looks interesting and the next time I was in Boots stocking up on Solpadeine (another remedy I use), I decided to purchase it. It was a whopping £6.19 which I though was a little over the top for its size – its tiny. I think Boots can be quite expensive so try other shops for a cheaper price.
•••So what is 4head?•••
It comes in a fuchsia pink box (a bit bright if you have a headache) and it is billed as ‘A natural headache treatment’ and ‘Headache relief for direct application to the forehead.’ It is made by Diomed
So you open the box and inside is a very small stick or tube – 5cm long and 2.5cm in diameter, not much longer than my pinky finger. It works just like one of those push-up deodorant sticks but inside this tube there is 3.6g of the ‘active ingredient’ 100% levomenthol, which is sort of opaque ice in colour.
What you are supposed to do is apply the ‘cone’ as they call it, I am more likely to call it the stick, gently across the forehead, a bit like the way you apply deodorant.
So I waited and waited but no headaches for a few weeks – good for me, bad for the testing of this product.
Then one day at work, I started to feel a headache come on and I whipped the 4head out of my bag. I must say, it is a handy handbag size.
I took off the transparent top and then the little safety lid inside of that and applied the stick to my head as instructed.
Woah, I started to feel a cooling tingly sensation, which felt quite weird. I am sure it would have stung my eyes if I was unlucky enough to get it too close to them. I guess judging by the name of the active ingredient, there is menthol in the product and it feels a bit like mint shampoo on your scalp – tingly and cooling – quite surreal.
It says inside that ‘It causes local skin sensations (such as cooling or tingling) at the site of the application, followed by an analgesic (painkilling) effect.’
I have to say, it didn’t do anything for me. Maybe it is not designed for severe headaches but it felt just like Tiger Balm, which I have never liked. Anyway it did not get rid of the headache, and I have now tried it twice. However, if you don’t want to take medication or if you are pregnant and can’t, it does appear to be a good alternative. I think I will stick to my Kool ‘n’ Soothe, which I have written an op about before. But try it if you think you need a change from pill popping.
Take care and thanks for reading - Kate
PS. Here are the health warnings:
•Do not use if you are sensitive to levomenthol. •Do not put in the mouth or swallow. •No evidence of associated side-effects has been demonstrated during use in pregnancy or lactation, however no safety data for such use is available. •The levomenthol in 4head may cause hypersensitivity including contact dermatitis. •For external use only. •Keep out of the sight and reach of children.
