I suffer from an inordinate amount of headaches, but have become increasingly concerned amount the number of headache tablets I take. There must be a massive build up of Hedex Extra in my system which cannot be doing me any good at all. I saw the TV adverts for a new "natural" product called 4head, so I thought I would give it a whirl. Nothing ventured - nothing gained and all that jazz… I hot footed off to my local branch of Boots and spent my usual ten minutes searching for the right aisle (am I the only one who can never find the right aisle quickly or do they just move things about between visits?!)
4head retails at a whopping £5.99 for 3.6 grams whilst I can get 16 Hedex Extra for £1.99. On the plus side, it will last for ages and the expiry date is not until 2006. It comes in a rather loud shocking pink box (good job I don't have a migraine). Inside the pink box is what is described as a "cutaneous stick" - a roll on product in tube about 6 centimetres high and 2 centimetres in diameter. It's a very handy size to shove in the bottom of your handbag or back pocket, and forget about.
You take the cap off, twist slightly and then gently apply the stick directly to the forehead (it's a bit like a mini roll-on deodorant). As the active ingredient in 4head is levomenthol (and yes it does smell rather minty), shortly after applying there will be a pleasant tingling sensation in that area. This is followed by a numbing sensation as the pain-killing bit kicks in. The skin will also feel much much colder to the touch, but it's not an unpleasant feeling. In fact, the sensation feels very soothing on the forehead.
If you apply it too near to your eyes it can make them smart a bit. One word of warning - it stings a lot if you get it in your eyes. I was not stupid enough to apply it directly to my eye, but I did put some on my forehead, followed by an itch, followed by rubbing my eye ten minutes later. Oh well, at least I hadn't been chopping chillies…
The advantages of using this product are that it's a natural remedy and it works very successfully on your average headache. It's a soothing and pleasant sensation and easy and simple to apply. Although expensive, the stick will last for ages and it has a really long shelf life. There is no published evidence of any side effects from using it, although it may cause hypersensitivity reactions if used excessively. However, I've been using it on and off for six months now and I have yet to develop any hyper-sensitivity. On the downside, it's not so effective on strong headache and migraines.
And the result is….it works for me - most of the time. I find that if you apply 4head at the start or onset of a headache it will disappear quickly and quietly. However, it is not so effective on a severe headache or migraine, as it's just not strong enough to kill the pain. If I wake up with a headache, I try 4head first - I give it half-an-hour to kick in, but if I'm still in pain, I reach for the Hedex Extra. At least this way, I am actively doing something to cut down on the number of chemicals I am shoving into my system.
Please note that this product should only to be used externally - NOT to be swallowed. Not to be used if you're sensitive to levomenthol. Can cause contact dermatitis. Suitable for all ages.
Have never bought this myself but recall trying it a couple of years back although I had a very mild headache at the time so I don't know how effective it really was. BUT it's definitely preferable to popping pills and good of you to include the tip about keeping it away from your eyes! x
