For years now I have suffered from headaches and migraines. When I get one of my migraines I lose feeling in my jaw and my left arm, which needless to say is not a pleasant experience. I can usually feel the migraines coming on as they start with a headache that doesn’t go away for several days. Now it is getting warmer these prolonged headaches seem to come more often so I have been popping the neurofen like there is no tomorrow, I don’t usually like to do this as I hate putting tablets and potions into my body so I thought a cure without pills seemed like a good idea.
So today when the headache became too much I nipped into Boots and picked up some 4head for £5.99 – bit steep but was in too much pain to care!
It
comes in a small tube about 2 ½ inches long and contains a glossy white stick – looks a bit like a dry stick deodorant to me.
The stick is packaged in a small pink box and in boots can be found next to all the other painkillers. There is a picture on the back of a rather strange looking lady – I assume this is what you’ll turn into if you let the headache go on. It not a risk I am willing to take.
To apply you take the first lid off and remove the small plastic safety cap and roll gently across your forehead (4head – forehead – get it?!). Be careful when doing this that you don’t get it too near your eyes and only apply a small amount at first. When you have finished wind the stick back in and replace both caps.
Once you have applied it you will get a tingling sensation not unlike the sensation you get when you use deep heat – but its cold. Its like having ice on your head – it also has a menthol smell. My suggestion would be that if this doesn’t work for you as a headache treatment keep hold of it until next time you have a blocked up nose and breath it in – that should help. The smell is like Vicks on a stick – not nice but not nasty either, hence the reason you don’t want to get it too close to your eyes – it makes them water; trust me on this I am speaking from experience.
After I had put it on I sat and waited for my miracle cure. After about 10 minutes I noticed the pain had lessoned slightly but not a huge amount, my neck felt more relaxed although the mint smell was starting to make me feel queasy.
My first attempt at this worked after about 20 minutes and then all was fine. About 2 hours later I could feel the headache returning so I put some more on, this time I used less and hey presto about 10 minutes later I felt better and because I put less on my eyes weren’t watering this time.
Once you have put it on, dont worry you will not be inflicted by and Adam and the Ant stripe - its is colourless and non greasy and will not interfear with your make up.
I have been to the website (address below) and they say the reason it causes pain relief is:
"Applied to the skin 4head's natural ingredient, levomenthol, is thought to relax local blood vessels, causing a sensation of coldness or tingling followed by an analgesic effect (pain relief). This action is believed to involve a reduction in sensitivity to pain signals. Levomenthol is also thought to help to relax the muscles in the head and the neck which are often associated with tension headaches"
Now i don't know if this is true but the whole website is quite an interesting read.
Some warnings that come with it are:
· Do not put in mouth or swallow (why you would want to do this is beyond me – would you eat Vicks?) · No evidence of side effects has been found during use in pregnancy; although no safety data is available yet. · The main ingredient levomenthol may cause hypersensitivity reactions including contact dermatitis. · Do not share with others (just in case they or you have a weird forehead I guess?!) · For external use only (I am not even going to comment on this one)
Generally for me this worked well enough to keep the aches away but it think it is not something for anyone. If I get a major bad headache I’ll probably head for the Anadin Extra or Neurofen again but this will do nicely as a handbag quickie cure.

£5.99 sounds a reasonable price to pay for pain relief, if there is a chance it will stop me swallowing more pills than would otherwise be necessary.

I agree with you about the holding off the aches, and I too would use a tablet form of painkiller, as the 4head roll-on isn't strong enough for bad headaches or migraines. Great op x x x Jo x x x
