I have now passed my test (wayhay!) but i definately couldnt have done it if it wasnt for the AA. I started learning to drive in September 2004 and i wasnt expecting to pass for a longtime because im nmot very good at picking practical things up, so i thought driving would be no exception! Luckily for me i was learning with the AA.
Brand spanking new ford focus. They get replaced every 6 months so you are always garanteed the newest and best model. To drive, it is very good, It is an average sized car, which is probably the size most 1st drivers will start with. The Steering is very responsive (obviosly power steered) and it is generally a a very comfortable and easy drive.
My instructor was called Alan and he was fantastic. On my 1st lesson i was so nervous because i had never driven a car in my life so i had absolutely no idea what anything did. I had a 2 hour lesson and for the 1st hour and a half we went through everything in the cockpit, from positioning your mirrors correctly and which mirror you would use for what, to the pedals and the light controls. It was very thorough and put my mind at easy. When it came to finally starting the engine i was talked very very slowely through everything that i had to do. I even had the biting point explained to me so i knew what was going on in the engine at that point! Very thorough! I continued to have 2 hour lessons ( which i would recomend instead of 1 hour) and each lesson i learnt something new. Everytime i did something new we would pull over the side of the road, he would talk through exactly what i had to do at what point and even drew diagrams or showed me diagrams of exactly what i had to do, and when it came to manouveres he would always offer to do it 1st so that i could watch what he was doing. I was a very nervous pupil but he was extremely patient with me and very encouraging. I know this is just 1 instructors but a lot of my friends have learnt with the AA and they have all had fantastic instructors aswell.
the cost varies over the country but if you visit the aa website they are able to tell you exactly how much each lesson will cost. Mine were £21 per hour so each 2 hour lesson was £42. However if you bulk pay for 12 lessons in advance you can get a discount. (I dont know the exact prices or discount because my mum paid for my lessons!
Overall i would definately recomend the AA to anyone who was thinking of learning to drive. Although the cost is relatively high you are garunteed a fantastic instructor. I passed within 6 months, which i thought would never happen!!! Look out on the roads,......i can drive now!!!
