I have never had much luck with cars and through no fault of my own I have been unable to accrue any no claims bonus. I have had 2 Cars stolen and 3 accidents (non whilst I was driving and 2 of them the car was parked up). It has therefore become a nightmare trying to get cheap fully comprehensive insurance.
Until now. My insurance was due for renewal in July and as I have done in previous years I searched the net for the cheapest quote and where I can pay by monthly direct debit. In most cases this meant an up front payment of two months premiums. This usually was about £300, not an amount to be sneezed at.
I also needed to renew my breakdown cover as the years free cover given when I bought my car was due to run out. That when I visited the AA website and found I could get an online quote for insurance too.
The online facilities were great. You then just had to confirm the details were correct. Also when it came to previous claims most other companies wanted information for the last 5 years here it was only the last 3 years. I don’t know about you but I can’t remember the exact date my car was stolen in 1999.
Although the quote I received was not quite the cheapest it did have the best payment plan. The only quote that beat the overall cost was Tesco’s, but again this meant making a hefty first payment. The adviser stated that my month payments could be reduced to reflect this or I could continue to pay the same amount each month and shorten the time for payments. I went with the second option. My new policy was received the next day.
Unfortunately or should that be fortunately, I am unable to comment on their handling of claims as I have not had need to use this service, and hope I never will.
All in all I am very happy with the service I have received from the AA. Their staff were friendly and efficient and even though it is a call centre you contact, it didn’t take long to get put through to the right person to deal with enquires.
Advantages: Reliability, value for money, peace of mind. Disadvantages: none I can think of
...of ringing around but the AA has always come out on top with a cheap quote which is value for money. They have a large database that looks around at hundreds of companies which I gather are checked by them and they pick the cheapest with the best value for money. The excess is always around £100-150 although of course you can alter that if you want to. There is always good windscreen and stereo cover. Legal fees you can always add on at a small additional ... ...I was really impressed at. The helplines are nearly always promptly answered and the staff generally very helpful and co-operative. In full, I would thoroughly recommend using the AA for car insurance - for value for money, reliability, helpfulness and most of all, peace of mind. ...

Advantages: I honestly can't think of any Disadvantages: AA are brokers. Take at least 5 months to arrange inspection
...I decided to contact AA Insurance as they were a well established and reputable (??) company. I arranged my insurance with them after being given a very reasonable quote. When my documents arrived it turned out the the AA are insurance BROKERS and my insurance was in fact with Provident Insurance, not AA at all. The documents were inaccurate too - they stated that there were no modifications to the car - although the AA had told ME that the car had ... ...in November and between the AA and Provident Insurance, the engineers report has just been carried out - yes, it is March and it has taken them nearly 5 months to come and look at the fact that the car has no wheels!! I have been in regular contact with both companies since and have still had no satisfaction. I have had no decision on whether or not I will receive a payout from them or not. And something else! I am still paying my insurance premiums. ...

The current AA adverts on the TV give the impression that they'll get you a very competitive quote. Indeed, we are meant to believe that phoning different insurers (or, presumably, using such Web sites) would be a waste of time for busy people.
For Comprehensive (full no claims) with protected-no-claims on a Volvo driven only by a low-risk driver with no bad history, with relatively small differences in policy details, quotes were £315 from Egg ... ...The CHEAPEST quote from the AA was £450!! This ridiculous premium was checked by phoning the AA.
Moral: don't be fooled by their TV advert! If like their advert and are going to try the AA, spend a few minutes at (say) the Egg Insure and Direct Line sites first, unless you are happy to pay more than a third more for your insurance. ...

Advantages: They do try and get you a decent price Disadvantages: They do not insure you directly – your actual insurer might give you problems
AA Insurance don’t do a bad job. To be fair they appear to have a search system designed to give you a good price. I was pleased with mine to start with, 10% off what I was paying and my insurance excess was reduced to £50 on any claim. Pretty decent I thought.
My policy came through and I discovered that it was through Drake Insurance. I had not heard of them, but did not think it would be a problem as having been found through the AA they would ... ...problems. They may well have been a decent company, but it did not stop them entering liquidation.
Since then I have had a multitude of forms to fill in. Worst of all due to Drake Insurance entering liquidation I might have to pay for repair work on a broken windscreen. Not very impressive for a fully comprehensive policy.
So due to Drake Insurance I will not be renewing my insurance with the AA. I do feel slightly sorry for them but I hope that ...

...motor insurance then avoid the AA (either online or over the phone) like the plague! I have attempted to get reasonable quotes for insurance on several occasions with little success. In almost all case I have received a quote that is well into the thousands of pounds.
Whilst I admit to being under 25, I have no reason to suspect that this is the problem. This is mainly due to hearing that they have not been willing to provide (reasonable) insurance ... ...was able to obtain an extremely agreeable quotation (which i accepted) from www.elephant.com, a purely online subsiduary of Admiral insurance.
On a positive note, there online service is comprehensive and reasonably well constructed. If you prefer to use the phone then I have always found they're staff knowledgeable and friendly. ...

I had regularly renewed both building and contents annually since 2003. In November 2008 I received a quote of £350 for buildings and £141 for contents. It took no time at all on the web to find a combined policy for £248 with exactly the same terms and with the same insurance company (MMA). The AA renewal quote says "Don't worry. {we} have searched our panel of over 10 leading insurers to get you a great price". It is nonesense. When I complained about that wording they said it was not misleading. When I asked for an explanation for the massive difference in pricing they said that my new broker was probably "providing a service with much lower commission". They made no attempt to offer a reduced quote but thanked me for my loyalty. DO NOT USE THEM. ...

Like many people, when we bought our first house, we needed buildings insurance in a hurry to get the mortgage, so we went with the cheapest quote we had at the time. As it happens it was the AA, who also gave a years free membership to their breakdown service as a gift (nice if you are a car owner).
Living in a tenement, you find that often you are asked to contribute to communal building repairs which can turn out to be very expensive. On the one occasion we did enquire about our cover (there was dry rot found in one of the bottom flats), we found that the AA and only one other insurerer of all the tenents, was prepared to pay for the work to be carried out.

Advantages: Low rate, low interest, quick and easy Disadvantages: Having to get a loan
Since I passed my driving test I've been driving around in a Volvo 340. By itself that doesn't sound too bad now does it? But what if I also mention that said Volvo 340 is twenty-one years of age, still not so bad? Well, I'm only nineteen years of age; hope that puts things into perspective for you. And, as if that wasn't bad enough since I've been driving said car the fan belt, the water pump, the spark plugs, all the tyres and the battery have been replaced, out of pure necessity. So, I wanted to get a new car, from the day after I passed my test.
