The current AA adverts on the TV give the impression that they'll get you a very competitive quote. Indeed, we are meant to believe that phoning different insurers (or, presumably, using such Web sites) would be a waste of time for busy people.
For Comprehensive (full no claims) with protected-no-claims on a Volvo driven only by a low-risk driver with no bad history, with relatively small differences in policy details, quotes were £315 from Egg Insure, £340 from Direct Line and £330 from a Volvo scheme. The going rate for that insurance is fairly clear cut.
The CHEAPEST quote from the AA was £450!! This ridiculous premium was checked by phoning the AA.
Moral: don't be fooled by their TV advert! If like their advert and are going to try the AA, spend a few minutes at (say) the Egg Insure and Direct Line sites first, unless you are happy to pay more than a third more for your insurance.

You all say the quotes arent competitive - well i spent a fortnight checking out different companies - the best of which was 590 but the aa quotes me 491 ???? so maybe they can save some of us?

I received my renewal notice whicj looked good but I decided to "waste time" ringing round and saved £14. When I rang back to complain that their TV advert was misleading they told me that they could only offer rates from their panel of insurers. I told them that my cheaper quote was with the same insurer (Churchill) and the same policy - they then offered to match my other quote - which I declined on the grounds that I had spent the time to find the cheap quote and they should have found it first since it was from their own panel!
So they don't check many insurers and they don't press for the best rates either.

Yeah, I noticed that their quotes don't seem to be competitive, the advert is very misleading.
