Who is reliable? Where can you get value for money without getting ripped off? Out of the thousands of firms advertised, which do you pick for quotes? Who will be quick and reliable in getting a claim sorted if you do have a crash?
I remember thumbing through the Yellow Pages and phoning around 30-40 companies. The range of quotes was astounding, with the biggest difference of £600 between quotes!
Being a complete novice, I went for a company I had never heard of, but was relatively cheap with what sounded like a good deal. They took my money up front and then turned around and said they could not insure me because I had not been on anybody's insurance in the previous year. They then refused to give me the whole amount back due to paperwork already having gone through. I was fuming but too concerned to argue because I was now left with only 3 days to find insurance.
I decided to go for a company that I HAD heard of and relatively trusted with the next cheapest quote. This turned out to be the AA. I went ahead and have been insured with them now for the past 3 years. Each time the renewal comes around, I have done a bit of ringing around but the AA has always come out on top with a cheap quote which is value for money.
They have a large database that looks around at hundreds of companies which I gather are checked by them and they pick the cheapest with the best value for money.
The excess is always around £100-150 although of course you can alter that if you want to. There is always good windscreen and stereo cover. Legal fees you can always add on at a small additional cost.
I was unlucky enough to have to use my insurance when I had an accident that was my fault last year. They were great. A vehicle was at my disposal by the next day and my car was taken to a local garage. The repairs were done quickly and the car returned to me. The claim was sorted out rapidly and with no hassle. Also, even though I had not paid for protection of my no-claims bonus with my insurance, I am still left with some no-claims bonus years, which I was really impressed at.
The helplines are nearly always promptly answered and the staff generally very helpful and co-operative.
In full, I would thoroughly recommend using the AA for car insurance - for value for money, reliability, helpfulness and most of all, peace of mind.
