Review of Kensington Microsaver Security Cable Lock

The most security you can get in a genuinely usable lock

Advantages: Really secure, not too small, not too heavy
Disadvantages: Too small for locking to general street furniture - Mounting bracket is a joke.

This is about the most secure lock you can use on your bike. It's just about long and wide enough to attach to most official bike posts and railings whilst still being small enough to make opening it with a car jack problematic. It's highly resistant to cutting tools, sufficient that cutting the post the bike is attached to would be the better option. It is a bit heavy, perhaps heavier than most locks of this size but still an easy carry in a back-pack. The weight can easily overwhelm the mounting bracket though so if you're going to jump kerbs or hit big potholes then don't use it. Removing the part of the bracket that attaches to the lock also makes it easier to fit through tight spaces. Size is everything though and the trade-off here is that making it small enough to be secure means that quite a bit of street furniture is too wide ...

Review of Kryptonite New York 3000 U Lock + Bracket

Security for a busy office

Advantages: Universal fitting, nice bag for carrying and not to heavy, very strong
Disadvantages: None other than the fact that we have to use one!

I am the IT Support in our open plan office of 80 plus employees, we have several different makes and models of laptop and I was given the task of sourcing a cheap way to secure them all. I looked at the other mainstream alternative but at around £30 was a bit steep to buy, especially as I needed more than 20 of them. Then I saw the Belkin, it is very strong, easy to secure and fits all models that come with the Kensington hole. It gives you a lot of flexibility once secured, which I find handy as I often have to turn the laptops over for various work requirements, the padlock is very reassuring and the length of cable makes fitting round a desk leg very easy. All this for just over £5, fantastic. So to sum up the Belkin Notebook Security Cable is long, flexible, very strong, easy to fit, highly compatible and very reassuring ...
