Advantages: So easy to use, compact sealed test. Very reasonably priced. Disadvantages: Only available to buy on the internet.
...DO YOU GET?
Each ACON One Step test contains a small foil pouch containing the test, a little pipette and a sachet of silica gel (to keep everything dry!). The instructions for the test are on the back of each packet.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Quite simply you...
(1) place the test on a level surface;
(2) collect a mid-stream urine sample in a collection cup;
(3) use the pipette to suck up some of the sample; ...'S');
(5) time the test for 3 minutes; and then
(6) read the result.
Of all the tests I have used over the years none have been so simple, so fool-proof and so cheap. Sorry Boots but I will not be buying any more of your pregnancy tests!
Update: They have stopped selling these tests to the public, they say that that they only sell these particular tests to professional end users including clinics, hospitals, ... more
Updated!...
My Husband and I have been trying to conceive our first child for over 9 years now.
As you can imagine over this time we have tried many home pregnancy tests; branded, shop's own brand, cheap and expensive.
Since discovering ACON's One Step pregnancy cassette test we will not be trying any other. Let me explain why...
PRICE ACON's One Step tests are so much cheaper than any that I have seen in any shop. My first batch cost me £12 for 20 tests, and that includes shipping. Yes, £12 for 20!!!! And they are not the flimsy cheap looking plastic ones that you have to dip in urine for 20 seconds.
DESIGN ACON's One Step tests are cleverly designed so that the whole test is enclosed, no strip to pee on for 'X' number of seconds, no worrying about running out of urine, no worrying about dipping it in for too long, or not long enough! No worrying about accidentally peeing on the test window.
HIGH STANDARDS ACON's One Step tests are ISO 9001 Certified - ISO is the International Standards Organisation and companies have to meet certain criteria with their procedures and pass regular audits in order to be certified.
ACCURACY ACON's One Step tests detect the pregnancy hormone 'hCG' at a very low level 25miu of hCG. To compare that with other tests Boots own brand detects hCG at 50 MIU and First Response detects hCG at 40 MIU (Source www.fertilityplus.org/faq/hpt.html ). Why does this matter? Well the lower the level it detects then the earlier you are likely to be able to get a result.
WHAT DO YOU GET? Each ACON One Step test contains a small foil pouch containing the test, a little pipette and a sachet of silica gel (to keep everything dry!). The instructions for the test are on the back of each packet.
HOW DOES IT WORK? Quite simply you... (1) place the test on a level surface; (2) collect a mid-stream urine sample in a collection cup; (3) use the pipette to suck up some of the sample; (4) drop 3 drops into the 'specimen well' (marked 'S'); (5) time the test for 3 minutes; and then (6) read the result.

Update: They have stopped selling these tests to the public, they say that that they only sell these particular tests to professional end users including clinics, hospitals, doctors, nurses, GP's, practitioners, research labs, universities, charities, schools etc.
However they do sell a very similar test that is the same 'cassette' format, the 'ACON Ultra Early 10miu home pregnancy test cassette packs'. At 10 tests for £16.99 with free UK delivery, it's still great value plus it's suitable for testing earlier, as it detects a lower amount of hCG in the urine than standard tests, it's the earliest commercially available home test.
Advantages: cheap and easy to use Disadvantages: quick but slightly fiddly
I have been using this brand of test for some time now due to the affordability. Although I have never had a posotive result, I know several friends that have, and two of these were days before their missed period. The advantages are the affordability, the quick development time and the clear lines. The instructions are straight forward with diagrams to help read the results easily. They can be bulk bought for those planning pregnancy or for those ... ...periods. On the other hand you can buy just a few at a time as well.
As always it is best to test with the first moring urine, although not compulsary. It comes foil wraped with a pippette to apply urine to the test and a packet of silicon to make sure the test is fresh.
The downside of this product is that they are available form the internet only and the tests are not in a plastic casing, thus meaning that the urine has to be collected in a container ...

Originally these tests were only available over the internet but i have recently seen them for sale at 99p a test in my local Savers. The procedure for taking this test is simple. You urinate into a clean receptacle, dip the stick for 10 - 15 seconds, lay it on a flat non absorbant surface and watch for the result. Results can be read within 3 minutes but NOT after 10 minutes.
If you are pregnant these test will tell you within seconds as they are ... ...they can pick up pregnancy very early on.
So far i have taken 5 this cycle 'just to be sure' as they gave me a positive 4 days before my period was due! I would recommend these if you are specifically trying for a baby and want to know as early as possible. I would also say that these tests would be useful to anyone who is undergoing fertility treatment, for the same reasons. You want to know as soon as possible if your procedures have worked. ...
