Manufacturer's product description
The ADIC FastStor is a seven-tape, random access DLT autoloader designed as an alternative to single, standalone tape drives. Its seven-tape capacity means fewer tape changes, lower administrative overhead, and fewer operator errors. It is sized to fit easily on top of a server, and two FastStor units can be rackmounted side-by-side in only 7 vertical inches (4u). The informative LCD readout and clear menu commands make operating the FastStor easy. With either a DLT4000, DLT7000, DLT8000 or DLT1 drive, FastStor can easily replace one or more standalone drives to provide a superior backup and file recovery solution.

Advantages: Fast, reliable, and the prices are coming down Disadvantages: Tape load time is still slow... typical DLT, though
...Enterprise backups are important... as we all know. I've long trusted DLT technology and the DLT-8000 doesn't disappoint. As long as you know how to get the most from a tape drive, and a SCSI subsystem in general, you won't have any problems, but you will have greatly shortened backups.
I've obtained nearly 350MB/minute with this drive. On an 100GB server, that puts the backup window at less than 5 hours!
There are two keys to getting the most out of these drives. First, ensure that your tape drive firmware is updated. There were at least 2 or 3 different versions that have been improved upon since these drives first came out. The update is really as simple as making the tape with a free utility, pushing a couple of buttons on the drive and inserting the update tape.
Second, make sure your SCSI controller is able to handle the speed...

Advantages: Cheap and fast spindle speed Disadvantages: More space
...So you have SATA and need a drive? This drive maybe for you, especially if you are looking at RAID in the future. These drives are now below £40 so three or four in RAID will give you the speed of a WD Raptor for less than the price of one!! The SATA gives you 150MB/S whereas normal Parallel ATA is way below that, also you will be able to feel the difference as the computer runs a lot faster as you have reduced one of the serious sub-system bottlenecks. It is fairly quiet and runs at 7200RPM spindle speed. However if you are looking for space and not speed I would suggest a 200GB or 300GB.
Not great for space, but possibly the best bang-for-buck if you are looking at RAID or speed.
