Manufacturer's product description
The Scalar 100 is a mid-range library that offers a powerful combination of industry-leading density, trouble-free scalability, and advanced storage networking technology. This capacity-packed system is the first tape library to deliver a storage density of 1TB per rack unit. In fact, a standard rack cabinet can hold three Scalar 100s, giving you up to 43TBs of capacity in a very compact space. Highly scalable, the Scalar 100 can grow from 15 to 96 tapes and from 1 to 8 drives. Adding capacity is easy. Upgrades take less than 10 minutes and don't require changing your rack system or adding external elevators or pass-through ports. The Scalar 100 also gives you enterprise-class storage features, including integrated SAN connectivity and management services, redundant power, remote management, and a bulk-load mailbox that can handle 2TBs at a time.
Advantages: Big and FAST Disadvantages: None come to mind......
...This is the second Lacie drive I've purchased, the former being a 120Gb d2 drive. This newer 400Gb drive features USB2 and firewire 400/800 connections allowing for connection to the more standard newer interfaces. I use a firewire 400 connection.
After looking at all the similar disks of different sizes, this model seemed the best for the price per Gig.....and this disk is fast! I use it on a windows 2K box, and it performs very well, and has not even been turned off for about 3 months. 3D animations stream off this incredibly fast, and the bottleneck if any would appear to be how fat the actual computer can deal with the data. I havent tested it, but I've heard that firewire 800 can be very cpu intensive....always best to get a good quality interface card to try and offload work from the main CPU.
Lacie do bigger disks...

...the leading edge LTO tapes have a small spring loaded "door" at the side through which the tape is dispensed into the drive. So unlike your videos, which spool from one side to the other, this is spun out in one long line and then rewound. I could be totally wrong but Fuji and the other manufacturers are a little obscure on this!
Enough of that anyway; what do you do with them?
You copy your ever so precious data onto it. Now I'm willing to bet a penny to an LTO drive that your data isn't worth £3000+. Nope, didn't think so.
But for business it is. Frequently it's worth a lot more than that.
Your average home user will NEVER need this much storage capacity. Each tape has a native (I.E. Uncompressed) capacity of 200GB. Most home PCs don't even have hard drives that big. Compress the data and you can get a theoretical capacity of 400GB...

...for the most highly recommended motherboards.
I stumbled across the Gigabyte 7NNXP whilst looking through a computer magazine, and they had given it a golden rating and it was obviously highly recommended. I found many more good things written about the Gigabyte 7NNXP, on the internet mainly, and jumped at the chance of owning one myself. I was lucky enough to see it available on the Dabs website in the B-Grade stock section (my favourite place for looking for PC components). Apparently it had been used briefly by one other person, and was still boxed with all accessories, drivers and manuals etc. For £80 I thought it was a real bargain for what I was getting, and at this moment in time it was retailing for upwards £100.
