On my last birthday my wife decided that she wanted to treat me to a home cinema system so off we went to our local Richer Sounds store (they are VERY cheap and VERY helpful - recommended everyone pays them a visit!) with cash in hand an wangled a deal.

These links are simple. They consist of one large black and white plastic ring which then has a series of other rings that can snap onto this main ring. These links are all different colours and textures. THere are 10 links in total and they have smooth ones, bobbly ones, ones with ridges on and ones with dots on. Advantages: Once you listen to black metal of this ilk there is no going back to the more traditional. Disadvantages: People do not listen to this type of music with an open ear and this album is a tough one

Black metal used to be an excersise in making essentially very melodic music fast, atmospheric and controversial.
The cutting edge of black metal is now very different. The one weak point in most black metal is the use of defined melody, harmony that is essentially no different to other music and is just presented in a 'black metal' idiom.
What Mayhem have created here is a sound that bears little to no resemblance to old black metal yet is more black than the likes of darkthrone or ulver.
