Their most recent processor the AMD Athlon 1.4 ghz has been a great success, and rivals the intel p4 chip with 600mhz more processing power Combined with a DDR (double data rate) motherboard, AMDs chip provides the ultimate solution for high end video editing and games. Compatable with a wide range of main board manufacturers including Gigabyte, Asus, msi and abit, the chip is widely available at low prices, just £90 for the 1.4 mhz chip, which has been proved to be faster than the PIV chip (on a DDR motherboard), and it costs £300 less. If you want a cheap pc with top specs then this processor is for you. With a bus speed of 133mhz and 10.5x clock multiplier, this chip will certainly top my pc upgrade list!... Read review

...AMD have certainly turned themselves around in recent times and now represent a viable option to Intel processors. Traditionally AMD have been strong in the "value"/budget segment of the market. The AMD Athlon is a processor that challenges Intel higher up the food chain. Advantages AMD Athlons are faster than Intel processors when comparing Mhz to Mhz. AMD Athlons are cheaper than Intel processors Mhz for Mhz. Possible pitfalls... AMD processors require motherboards with "Socket A". These are different to motherboards that support Intel processors and tend to be slightly more expensive. It is highly recommended that you use an AMD approved power supply with your AMD processor.
