I bought this processor for £145, for the E4 stepping, which is cheap for the same core as what is put in the FX series of processors (San Diego). This features a whopping 1MB L2 cache which enables the processor the slight edge in games. The chip operates at 2.2 Ghz, however the AMD Index rating rates it at 3700+. This is the equivlent roughly of a pentium 4 or an Athlon Thunderbird at 3.7 Ghz. AMD rates this at 3700+ because it does more instruction per cycle (1 cycle = 1hertz) than the other two processors.
The new San Diego cores use the new DSL (Dual Stress linear) and the 90nm process, which makes it more efficient and faster than the old Winchester cores. The 939 socket features the AMD onboard memory controller, instead of the northbridge (chipset) doing the job. This leads to quicker communication between the CPU and memory increasing the speed of the computer.
The multiplier is locked at 11. So the Front side bus (HTT), which is 200mhz is multiplied by 11 to give the 2.2Ghz. The chip features Cool'n'quiet which enables the motherboard to lower the multiplier and the core voltage when you are using the internet or low level applications to save power, also when it is cooler the fan can slow down so the heatsink remains quieter. It also has HyperTransport so the CPU can communicate with the PCI and PCI-e devices at a whopping 2000mhz.
The core runs at 1.4 volts so it produces little heat compared to the older CPU's, onlt 89 watts of heat per metre. Unlike the 4000+ (2.4) the heatsink does not come with heatpipes. This limits its cooling capability, so the 3700+ is a bit hotter than that, but only 5c or so.
This CPU is only single core, so you cannot play and encode with this CPU. However with the dual core 3800+ at £200 and this at £145, so if you want to encode and play dual core is for you. However if you need a cheaper solution and only play games this CPU is for you.
So how does it overclock? Personally my CPU goes like a rocket. Equipped with a 166 memory divider this cpu goes to 2.8 GHZ on air with stock voltages. Yes 2.8 GHZ maybe more and completely stable. That is the same as a FX-57 which costs over £600, and is above the 4000+ (£233) and the FX-55 (£500). It stills stays cool though, below 50c. When it is a 2.8 every game, FEAR, Oblivion and HL2, the depth and the FPS is ashonishing.
The only problem I had is the fiddly clip and catch no the heatsink. When you fit it to the motherboard, the catch is difficult to secure to the mothboard through the fear of the catch snapping or applying to much pressure.
Unless you overclock or play games go for the 3000+ or 3500+, then if you need dual core I suggest the 3800+ X2. Until the price of the dual core comes down I suggest this product. Now I'm off to try the new AMD AM2 socket which features 940 pins. Reviews to come soon.

It’s also very powerful, benchmarking against the top Intel 3ghz+processors, this chip(which actually runs nearer 2ghz) really gives them a run for their money. The best part though is that this ... ...The title says it all, AMD 64 processors have a fantastic new technology built in which allows them to actively clock themselves up and down in speed. In a typical example, sitting on the desktop browsing the web or viewing word documents, the full speed is not needed. At this point the processor clocks itself down to 800mhz. This speed is more than enough when you consider that this more modern processor will do more in 1mhz than the likes of a ...

This is an absolute great processor for office use. It can bear very high temperatures, and with the right motherboard and bios it can be overclocked easily. Works great at Windows XP when using word, internet, reading your e-mail etc. (office use). When this processor is installed properly and doen't have to endure very high temperatures it will have probably a lifetime of 5-10 years (maybe even longer).
