Review of AMD K7 (Athlon) by dazzle

Advantages: Cheap, Fast, Definitely a good buy.
Disadvantages: Runs very hot and needs compatible motherboard and power supply

...AMD have certainly turned themselves around in recent times and now represent a viable option to Intel processors. Traditionally AMD have been strong in the "value"/budget segment of the market. The AMD Athlon is a processor that challenges Intel higher up the food chain. Advantages AMD Athlons are faster than Intel processors when comparing Mhz to Mhz. AMD Athlons are cheaper than Intel processors Mhz for Mhz. Possible pitfalls... AMD processors require motherboards with "Socket A". These are different to motherboards that support Intel processors and tend to be slightly more expensive. It is highly recommended that you use an AMD approved power supply with your AMD processor. If you don't you are liable to suffer from unexplainable crashes. This is because AMD processors run much hotter than Intel processors. It is very easy... Read review

Athlon is better
Review of AMD K7 (Athlon) by spunky

Advantages: Faster
Disadvantages: Doesn't like new programmes

...I used to have a computer with a Pentium 3 750MHZ processor, which I changed for a computer with an AMD Athlon 750MHZ processor. In my view there really is no comparison between the two. They may be rival processors, but the Athlon leaves the Pentium 3 standing. I gave my old computer to a friend, but before I did, I had a little test. When I switched both computers on at the same time, the Athlon machine booted up quicker than the Pentium 3 machine, even though both machines had the same programmes to load at startup. Opening applications such as Adobe Photoshop, with the AMD Athlon machine is also much quicker. Also I find it much better for games etc. I'll never go back to using a Pentium based machine, it will always be an Athlon machine, in future.........they are the better processor by far. I recommend AMD Athlon based machines... Read review

Review of AMD Thunderbird by grant_tg

Advantages: Best PC Processor on the market and at very reasonable price
Disadvantages: Hard to find a cheap decent motherboard, and the usual AMD heat and power consumption problems

...they called Slot A. AMD definitely ruseled a few feathers when they realised the Athlon, the benchmarks were superior to Intel’s flagship in a lot of ways especially the floating point. The Athlon 600Mhz bosted a faster floating point than the Intel’s 700Mhz chip. Intel then decided to throw it’s weight around, and tried to bully the motherboard manufactures not to produce the AMD chipset as well as the VIA one. ASUS (in my opinion the best motherboard manufacture at the current moment) produced the K7M based on the AMD 750 chipset but did not label it made by ASUS and didn’t offer any support for the board, though it did perform the best in all the benchmarks. Intel’s bully technique didn’t work and they were forced to bring out the latest Pentium III core early the coppermine core boasting 256Kb cache... Read review
