Full review
i bought this chip over a year ago when i built my pc, and i have been happy with it ever since.

NB: I apologise for the lack of capitals, dooyoo removed them...

>value<
this chip offers great value for money and bang-for-the-buck. it is very fast for general windows tasks, and can still handle the latest games when coupled with a fast graphics card. it was cheap when i bought it, and will no doubt be cheaper still now. if you are looking to built a reasonably specced pc on a budget, then an athlon xp around this speed is dead worth it. we're talking £40 quid here.

>installation<
note : this cpu has a fsb of 133mhz. therefore you will need to use a compatible athlon motherboard that supports the athlon xp and this bus speed. in addition you will need 266mhz (2x133) ddr ram.

the chip is easy to install if you have done it before, but if you haven't installed a cpu before then check out a guide online. be careful, as many athlon heatsink/fan combinations (you will need one of these) are heavy, and fiddly to fit (e.g. poorly designed). athlon cores can also be quite fragile (some people have cracked them) so take it slow.
you will need:
the cpu
some high quality thermal paste (e.g. arctic silver, cooler master)
a heatsink/fan (i recommend the vantec aeroflow i am using now - cool and quiet).
a screwdriver (for levering the heatsink/fan, no doubt)

>configuration<
set your fsb (front side bus) speed to 133mhz in your bios (e.g press 'delete' or whatever at startup).
the cpu multiplier will be set automatically (this sets the speed your cpu runs at). see below.

>performance<
the performance is good, although as can be expected it is surpassed by newer cpu's. still, it performs very well compared to equivalent pentium4's (which are more expensive) and is always preferable to a celeron. as always, the cpu can only perform as fast as your other components allow it (eg. motherboard, memory) and especially your Graphics card when it comes to games.

>Overclocking<
For those of you who want to overclock to get every drop of performance out of this CPU then this is very possible. I tried a little bit by increasing the FSB and the chip ran perfectly comfortably at 1900+, although I didnt want to damage anything (eg my RAM) by taking the FSB any higher. However, the CPU multiplier can be adjusted manually if you unlock the L1 bridges (two contacts on the chip) by soldering or even using a pencil (check online how to do this).
DISCLAIMER : Overclocking makes the chip run at speeds it was not intended to run at, creating excess heat and potential instability issues. This will no doubt void several warranties and may damage the chip and/or your other hardware through thermal damage. I accept no responsibility - this is provided solely as information, and overclocking is undertaken at your own risk.

Overall, this chip has served me well, and as such is recommended and rated highly.
Dave.

Disadvantages: Crappy speakers. Skimped on the software.

...the price of other laptops at the same time though, so you may still get a bargain if you are after a laptop. Anyway, here’s what you get for your money: ----- CPU/Processor: … …: AMD Mobile Athlon XP 1800+ (1.53GHz in reality). I have to admit that the mobile Athlon XP CPUs are excellent. They save power when you are doing less power hungry tasks and run at lower speeds. Then when you need the power they will pull out the stops and roar along, making life that much easier. If you were using the Likes of MS Word, the CPU speed would drop to around 500 MHz which would be more than adequate for the task, but if you were playing a game the speed would increase when needed. 1.53GHz is powerful enough to perform virtually any tasks that you throw at it and not be found wanting. The fan for the CPU is pretty quiet, but speeds up when it detects... Read review
