Manufacturer's product description

Just as your trusty old Pentium-class office PC's, which were top-of-the-line when you bought them, begin to slip into the great void of obsolescence, Evergreen's Spectra processor upgrade arrives to rejuvenate them. The Spectra is an affordable upgrade for computers with Socket 5 and Socket 7 motherboards, and is ideal for improving the performance of office PC's -- a great alternative to investing in whole new units. For most 75MHz and faster Pentium-class computers, it raises the processor clock speed, enough to handle the advanced data processing and multimedia software that your business uses today. This version of the Spectra uses the processor core with 3DNow! instructions, which enhance many popular software titles such as Quake II and Unreal. The MMX instruction set is also supported, for existing MMX-enhanced software. 3DNow! technology, developed by AMD, streamlines the way a processor handles common 3D graphics and multimedia operations, increasing the performance of those types of programs noticeably. Software titles must be optimized to take advantage of 3DNow!, and an established base of many 3D games, graphics editors, and multimedia programs already exists which is 3DNow!-optimized. The Spectra incorporates a voltage regulator and clock multiplier to compensate for the limitations of your older motherboard. Evergreen also includes a BIOS update disk with the Spectra, since you may be required to upgrade your motherboard's BIOS to enable support for the Spectra. You have the option of restoring your original BIOS in the event that the Spectra is incompatible with your PC.

Value for Money
Review of AMD - K6-2 by tcook5

Advantages: Cost, stability, performance
Disadvantages: Out of date Socket 7 Motherboard.

...I originally bought a system with a 300 mhz AMD-K62 processor because it was rated as being as good as a PII 400 mhz. I was very impressed by the stability and performance compared with the Cyrix chips and Intel chips. I upgraded with a AMD K6-2 500mhz for forty pounds and i now have a pc which is capable of running anything i want. I run a lot of processor hungry games such as Unreal Tournament with a relatively slow graphics card. With this upgrade the performance has increased by at least 33%. The machine now boots up windows faster and installs programmes faster without (so far) any compatability issues. I would recommend an AMD chip over an Intel chip from this experience. The only criticism i have is now i have to change motherboard when i upgrade to a Duron or Thunderbird.... Read review

AMD K6 IIIplus 450MHz Suitable For Super Socket 7
Review of AMD K6 III by Union

Advantages: Saves Money on Upgrading a Super Socket 7 Motherboard
Disadvantages: Motherboard needs to support a Core voltage of 2.0, also requires the latest BIOS upgrade for your motherboard

...Although the AMD K6 III+ 450MHz was designed for laptop use they can be used in Super Socket 7 motherboards as many of the major board makers have now released BIOS upgrades to support the CPU. The AMD K6 III+ 450MHz is available on auction sites such as eBay and QXL, but not in the shops as they are only released by AMD as OEM for the major laptop makers. The CPU is made using the 0.18 Micron process which is the same as the Duron range, the old K6 III series which is no longer available was made using the 0.25 Micron process. So as look as your board supports a Core voltage of 2.0, Multiplier of 4.5, FSB of 100MHz. It is also possible to overclock these processors to 600Mhz because of the 0.18 Micron process and the 2.0v Core voltage with the use of a good fan and heartsink. All this will help the owners of Super Socket 7 motherboard... Read review

All the power, fraction of the cost
Review of AMD K-6 by BlackOps

Advantages: Reliable, fast and low cost.
Disadvantages: May require updated patches for the Bios/chipset.

...The AMD range of K6 processors was a bit of a god send, providing the speeds to match the Intel range of processors, but without paying out an arm and a leg for the privilege. I made the jump from an Intel P-100Mhz to an AMD K6-2 450Mhz, and apart from some problems with the ALi chipset on the motherboard (which was solved with an updated driver) it has been running fine for months now. I would highly recommend using this brand of CPU if you require a decent reliable processor, but without the high price of the mainstream branded chips. It has made upgrades for many of my friends easier, and more affordable, and there is no noticable difference performance as far as I can see.... Read review
