In order to satisfy the demands of its customers, Compaq offers a variety of upgrade options, thus eliminating the need for purchasing new computers every time something new appears on the market.
Advantages: FAST, brilliant 3D, New life into old PC Disadvantages: Discontinued and scarce. Hope K6-2plus appears soon. Dearer than K6-2

The 3D-Now instruction set is amazing on games and with his Voodoo Banshee AGP board, 3D renditions are bloody marvellous.
Hopefully AMD will relaunch this chip soon it is the strogest and best transplant possible in a Socket7 motherboard.
A WORD OF WARNING for all AMD chips... Use a decent fan with heat trnsfer compound and ensure that your motherboard supports the K6-3, MMX and P55C split voltage standard.
A real improvement on the K6-2 but the latter is no slouch either.
WARNING.... You may get boot-up problems with Win95 and Win98 on AMDprocessors faster than 300MHz. If you do, clock the speed down to 300MHZ and download the AMD timing fix from either AMD or Microsoft. Once installed clock back to normal speed.. By the way, ALL recent AMD chips WILL NOT OVERCLOCK and may be damaged if you try. You read it here first....

Advantages: The AMD is hard 2 crash totally where you will have to restart. It is well worth the money Disadvantages: That they only made them upto 550mhz
...GET AN AMD!! When the time came for me to upgrade my 166mmx and i did'nt have much money to spare. So i looked in the computer cataloge and saw AMDK6-3 550mhz 3D-NOW! I thought that looked good, espically for the price. I thought to my self i must investigate this. So i looked it up what other people thought of it and everyone said that it was good. Then i looked at the motherboard prices!It was then a must have, they are not exspensive at all!!!! So i bought the motherboard, RAM, and processor for just over £130- A very nice price. I put them togeather inside my pc not really knowing weather it was good or not, after mixed opinions!
IT WAS AMAZING!!!!! When i loaded a program it was quick, but if a program crashed in windows the other programs kept on running, and it had little effect on them. So i would shut the crashed program...

Advantages: Cost, stability, performance Disadvantages: Out of date Socket 7 Motherboard.
...I originally bought a system with a 300mhzAMD-K62 processor because it was rated as being as good as a PII 400 mhz. I was very impressed by the stability and performance compared with the Cyrix chips and Intel chips.
I upgraded with a AMDK6-2 500mhz for forty pounds and i now have a pc which is capable of running anything i want.
I run a lot of processor hungry games such as Unreal Tournament with a relatively slow graphics card. With this upgrade the performance has increased by at least 33%.
The machine now boots up windows faster and installs programmes faster without (so far) any compatability issues.
I would recommend an AMD chip over an Intel chip from this experience.
The only criticism i have is now i have to change motherboard when i upgrade to a Duron or Thunderbird....

Go on admit it. You know you want a faster processor, but every time you check the prices you gasp in horror at what the current prices stand at. This CPU is no different, it is expensive to many consumers' minds and many cannot find a good enough reason more
