I don’t have an Athlon processor yet as I have just finished university and so am stuck with a PIII 500 that I got form work for nothing. But at work we sell more Athlon processors than others, why? It’s because they cost a lot less than P4’s and they are much better. My friend has one in each of his computers and when he upgraded from a PIII to an Athlon I could easily spot the difference as the machines are brimming over with processing power. Athlons do have one problem and that is that they are, putting it bluntly, bun ovens. they do tend to heat up a lot but with a good fan and cooler you should have no problems.

At its introduction the Athlon processor set new performance standards in personal computing and it continues to enable leading edge performance for cutting-edge applications. The 7th generation of processors include 266 or 200MHz system bus and 384K cache. This is the largest amount in processors at the moment. The clock speeds are 1400, 1330, 1300, 1200, 1130, 1100 and 1000MHz.

The Athlon contains three out-of-order, superscalar floating point units this gives it the most amount of power than any other processor of its kind. The Athlon delivers smooth and quick-rendering graphics; rich images, fast frame rates and Dolby Digital surround sound. Athlons feature 3DNOW Professional technology, which includes 52 new instructions to the existing enhanced 3DNOW technology. This gives the processor more power to do integer maths, Internet streaming applications and also better Dolby. Another advantage of an Athlon is that they support DDR (Double Data Rate) RAM; this doubles the data throughput to the processor. This offers significant performance gains on memory-intensive applications.

Benchmark tests:
Half-life (1024X768)
AMD Athlon 1400MHz 129%
P4 1700MHz 100%
P4 1400MHz 87%

BAPCo SYSmark 2000
AMD Athlon 1400MHz 128%
P4 1700MHz 100%
P4 1400MHz 89%

Adobe PhotoDeluxe 3.0
AMD Athlon 1400 138%
P4 1700MHz 100%
P4 1400MHz 84%

As you can see from this, while the P4 processor may feature higher numbers on clock speeds and system bus, its performance on things like productivity applications can be less than optimal. A processor is more than just megahertz. So hopefully this gives you some information on Athlon processors and maybe you will choose to upgrade to one of them.
