After more than 30 emails, I was left with only one option...to cancel payment of my AOL subscription at the Visa card end. AOL simply continued with a cancelled free trial and then refused to discuss the matter except by formula (read:nonsense) emails. I discover this is their default practice. I called and called and even used the online HELP service. No division of AOL deals with another. Each claims to be horrified about the compalint. All agree AOL will fix it as it is their mistake. Each department says it is someone else's fault. Not even the listed complaints manager will answer emails. Truly...it is like quicksand. Slimy and suffocating. DO NOT SIGN UP TO AOL. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO STOP PAYING.

Updated: 1:45 p.m. ET Aug. 24, 2005 ALBANY, New York - America Online Inc., the world's largest Internet service provider, will pay $1.25 million in penalties and costs and reform some of its customer-service practices to settle an investigation by New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's office.
Around 300 consumers had filed complaints with Spitzer's office accusing AOL, a wholly owned subsidiary of Time Warner Inc., of ignoring demands to cancel service and stop billing.
The company, with 21 million subscribers nationally, rewarded employees who were able to retain subscribers who called to cancel their Internet service. For years, AOL had minimum retention or "save" percentages that customer-service personnel were expected to meet, investigators said. Employees simply ignored cancellation instructions.

I had hell with AOL when I tried to unsubscribe from broadband when my modem didn't turn up and was told I would be charged a cancellation fee as I hadn't used the service for a year. The review would be better placed in the buyer beware category so if you would like help moving it there just holler in my guestbook. Fionaxx
