Don't get me wrong this a gret product with excellent support.

Thje one thing that let it down was the management software.. the software shipped with the Ups (uninteruptible power supply) had a glitch which caused servers running windows 2000/2003 to crash for no apparent reason. This issue was quickly fixed and updates for the powerchute management software is available from APC's website.

The product itself is designed to keep server up and running for as long as possible during a power cut. This verision and some of the earlier version of the smartups ups have built in surge management to filter high and low mains power.

Conections

The smartups 1500 has USB and serial connections for the management software.The USB connection is for windows based software. The serial connection is for software that doesn't support usd I.E. SCo openserver 5.0.*

Power connectiones

1x mains connection
8x Peripheral connection IE server/pc, Monitor, Hub etc

Software

Until recently these ups device were shipped with either powerchute version 6.8 or 7.0. Version 7.0 caused windows servers to crash as mentioned above. I recomend that before installing the ups on a widows based server/ pc you download the latest version of Powerchute from APC's website,
The cd itself shipped with the ups has serveral O/s drivers and management software these include windows , sco openserver, sco unixware, Novell netware, Linux and sun systems.
The software is a basic monitoring package that enable you to set the amount of up time before the software atomattically shuts down the server/pc during a power cut. It also enables you to monitor the battery state and also power surges etc...
The software can also be configure to email you if there is a problem ie powercut or power surge also if the batteries inside need replacing.

All in all this product will save your server your business and down time!!!!!!! A must buy for small and large businesses.

A quick note although you can plug upto 2 servers, Monitors, Network Hubs and routers into these devices. They CAN NOT RUNING ANY TYPE OF PRINTER OFF OF THEM. this is because printers draw to much prower when a print is sent to then and can cause overloading and complete system crashes!!!!!

As far a value for money goes It comes down to this As nearly all companies rely on computer these days how much would you money would you loose if your server was down due to a power cut etc....

I not saying that these device are infalable but they will stop a lot of problems caused by power surges and cuts....
