This again I found worrying, how could the likes of Tango or Fanta charge nearly four times as much for basically the same product? Did it mean that Tango and Fanta were nearly four times better than ASDA`s offering? Only one way to find out.

As we seem to be in the midst of a hot spell, and struggling with the heat somewhat myself, I decided to pop into ASDA in search of some liquid refreshment. Unfortunately, everyone had had the same idea as the soft drinks aisle looked like it had been the unfortunate scene of a particularly brutal smash and grab raid.
Indeed, all that seemed to have survived were a few 6 packs of ASDA SmartPrice Orangeade. I was immediately concerned that no one had bought this particular brand of drink, what did the other shoppers know that I didn’t? Not wanting to go to another Supermarket and getting hotter by the minute I took the plunge and bought some.
Now, 79p doesn’t buy much these days but it does buy a 6 pack of ASDA SmartPrice Orangeade. This again I found worrying, how could the likes of Tango or Fanta charge nearly four times as much for basically the same product? Did it mean that Tango and Fanta were nearly four times better than ASDA`s offering? Only one way to find out.
When I got home I placed the 6 cans in the fridge, (no one wants warm Orangeade now do they), and waited for them to chill. This gave me ample time to study the Ingredients and Nutritional Information supplied on the packaging that held the cans, the details of which are:-
Ingredients:-
Carbonated Water, Citric Acid, Flavourings, Sweeteners (Aspartame, Saccharine, Acesulfame K), Preservative (Sodium Benzoate), Antioxidant (Ascorbic Acid), Colour (Carotenes). The product also contains a source of Phenylalanine.
One issue here is that there is no real fruit juice in the product and that the flavour and colour is made up entirely from artificial additives. Perhaps care should be taken if you are giving this product to children.
Nutritional Values:-
Energy - 9kj or 2.2 Calories per can, Protein – trace, Sodium – trace, Salt – trace, Carbohydrate – nil, Fat – nil, Fibre – nil.
The packaging also tells me about the ASDA guarantee; it states “We want you to enjoy this product. If you don’t, simply return it and get your money back”. Excellent, I’ve got nothing to loose, have I?
So with the science lesson over and the drinks properly chilled I retrieved one of the cans and took the plunge. As I lifted the drink to my mouth I noticed the plainness of the can, (pure white with small black writing – perhaps coloured ink would push up the price), and took a swallow, fearing the worst……
..…Hang on a minute, that not too bad, it tastes of oranges and is not too sweet. Another gulp of the cool liquid and yes, I quite like it. There is no unpleasant aftertaste sometimes found in products containing artificial sweeteners and it doesn’t seem to be overly gassy. A further sip which I swill around my mouth does not cause any tingly burning sensations, which is always a bonus. On finishing the can I feel sufficiently refreshed, which after all was the purpose of the exercise.
Five minutes after polishing off the Orangeade I am struck with a minor burping episode, but I find this happens with any fizzy drinks I consume so no real worries there. So all in all a nice product, it is not the best soft drink I have ever tried, but for the price it is by far the best value. Mr Tango and Mr Fanta should keep one eye over their shoulders, ASDA SmartPrice Orangeade is an acceptable and cheaper alternative.
Advantages: Cheap Disadvantages: Aritificial, and you can taste it!
...everyone who's been into an Asda store (Now part of the American group Wal Mart) has been greeted by their plain white Smartprice items. Just about everything is available, from Pasta to Cat food.
Its Asdas Budget brand.
The packaging couldn't be any more basic. Their is a white label, with Smartprice writte in Red, and the little Fox logo. On the back, in black this time, is the nutritional content and ingredients (Very few of either) with Asdas ... ...going to take a 20p-a-can item back Im not sure about though!)
The taste is very artificial, and it becomes more obvious the more you drink. You can (Just) tell it is Orangeade, but the flavour is a bit dull, bland and boring. The aftertaste is generally disgusting, its like a chemical cocktail in your mouth.
The price - in tins - works out at about 20p a tin (They come in 4-packs) and are, in cosideration very good value. However, I'd much rather ...

With comparison to other smart price products this bites. It tastes allot like flat cola, but does taste allrite in the cans but not in the bottle at around 29p per litre bottle it is a cheep buy this resembles in its taste.
the after taste is much like when you wake up and your mouth is dry and it is horrible. It also leaves this thing on your teeth that makes them feel rough and makes you want to brush them imediatly.
product packaging, this product ... ...with the black writing and the smart price logo this make's the product look dull and boaring. Which may contribute to the whole black cloud above this product. this product is for the stubents of this world for a quick drink of for people with kids that drink loads of pop in a week. ...
