    Advantages Advantages Tasty!

Disadvantages Disadvantages Only Available in Asda!

I asked for this review to be added some time ago and forgot all about it, typical eh? I wanted to tell you about what a fantastic find this really is. Asda Passata Sauce as you can guess is only available from Asda, coming in a 500g recyclable tetra pak carton, a bit like a milk carton but without the images of milk and cows of course, instead you are lured with images of nice sieved italian tomatoes in a blue carton, so there's no way you can get it confused with your milk! The taste is simply delicious,a bit like Heinz Tomato Ketchup but without the vinger or sweet taste, just pure fresh ... more

Passata is one of those wonderful products to keep in the back of your cupboard until you feel creative, and then make some lovely food . Passata is essentially just sieved tomato . Unlike your tinned tomatoes, you won't find any chunks in this - its a thickish smooth tomato sauce, on it's own pretty bland, but you can make all manner of things with it - it can replace tinned tomato in any dish, or with the addition of some spices, some worcestershire sauce and a generous slug of vodka, can make a very passable bloody mary . The packaging is pretty simple - a foil lines tetra pack complete ... more

Advantages Advantages Good Base for anything Italian, and everything else

Disadvantages Disadvantages None that I can see

This product can be found in many guises, it is sold as this in ADSA, and as "Creamed Tomatoes" in Sainsburys, but in both places it costs around 40p for a 500ml carton. And can also be found in 700ml Glass Bottles for 69p. I use this a base for a simple tomato and basil pasta sauce, Bolognese, Chilli, Curry and home made tomato soup. The consistency is somewhere between single and double cream and is completely smooth, good for people who don't really like bits of tomatoes in food! It tastes like tomatoes, (strangely!), but not in an acidic way, more like italian plum tomatoes, but without ... more

5 Stars Quick review of ASDA Smooth Passata Sauce by cjabingham1973 23/08/2009
Nice but smartprice passata in the green and white cartons have no added salt or citric acid. So healthier being salt free! Asda passata is on multibuy 4 for £1 at the moment until 1st September 2009 but online only as it wasn't in my Blackburn store!

    Advantages Advantages Cheap

Disadvantages Disadvantages A bit too sweet and I couldn't find any smaller cartons

I wrote this review wrong originally as you can see from the storms of protest. I can now write something hopefully more helpful as I've tried the Asda Passata. I've gone off Asda in general but I did like this product. The sauce is basically just seived tomatoes and I add it to pasta. It's quite sweet on its own so I add olive oil and onions if I am having it with pasta shells. I sometimes also add crushed, pureed garlic or garlic Lurpak. The Passata is quite watery so it's not very good for a pizza base, unfortunately. Seived tomatoes are good for someone fussy like me. I dislike seeds ... more
