Checking on the ASUS website I found this baby, and with a unique VIA chipset which supported Dual Channel PC3200, this had to be a goody.
The features on this board are pretty standard, Gigabit Ethernet, AGP 8x, SATA etc but it was for gaming so I wasn't so obsessed about RAID or firewire. I also have a A8V Deluxe, ... ...fine.
Downloading drivers was no chore and although the site goes down from time to time, with a downloader tool it comes down with some haste.
I had some issues with the BIOS, it conficted with my graphics card, but with the online assistance I managed to sort it.
Also, the memory can only handle 2 slots of double sided PC3200 which I found out to my horror when I upgraded from 2x 512MB kits to a 1GB ... more
When looking for a motherboard for my Athlon XP2800+, which I wanted to overclock, I wanted the fastest socket A available.
I've been a fan of ASUS for a while and I've had no problems with their VIA range so I stuck with it.

The features on this board are pretty standard, Gigabit Ethernet, AGP 8x, SATA etc but it was for gaming so I wasn't so obsessed about RAID or firewire. I also have a A8V Deluxe, which has more functionality than I need, so this does fine.

Also, the memory can only handle 2 slots of double sided PC3200 which I found out to my horror when I upgraded from 2x 512MB kits to a 1GB kit and a 512MB kit. The support guy suggested a BIOS revision, which did nothing. Perhaps this is just a technical limitation, but I persisted and got a 2GB kit which fits into one slot per channel. This is pointed out in the manual, I just didn't read that part.
With these issues aside, I still say this is a great motherboard and wouldn't swap it for anything.
Plus, it has a big number in the title, which is good for the machismo!!
Advantages: Dual Channel, Reliable, Value Disadvantages: Memory limitations, BIOS issues

Manufacturer's product description
Comparable to NVIDIA nForce 2 SPP (Ultra 400), VIA KT880 ultimately delivers the outstanding performance for socket A processors. The ASUS A7V880, supporting VIA KT880/VT8237 chipsets with 400MHz FSB and dual-channel DDR 400, is a great solution for high-end peripheral connection and robust processing power.
