Advantages: Super reliable, cheap Disadvantages: boot issues
Let's get to the bottom line first - buy this without hesitation if you want a decent motherboard at a top price. I upgraded not so long ago and bought this board, and although it wasn't my first option, I havn't regretted it since.
It supports DDR 400 up to a maximum of 1.5gb and a CPU speed of up up to 2.4Ghz. With plenty of features, a great price and reliability, it's almost faultless. ALMOST. All because of one niggling fault. ...i've had with this board is its refusal to boot up my mouse and keyboard. Amazingly, the instuction booklet did help. It directed me straight to Asus' website where i downloaded a new bios for it. After flashing it with the new bios I haven't had any more problems.
What it comes down to is, how big of a problem this is to you. Personally, I recommend this card just because of what it can handle and equally as importantly - the price. ... more

The main problem, and the only problem, i've had with this board is its refusal to boot up my mouse and keyboard. Amazingly, the instuction booklet did help. Advantages: 4xUSB Ports, 5.1 Surround Sound, Price Disadvantages: USB 1.1 not USB 2, No FireWire
ASUSMotherboards are about the best manufactured motherboards around. This particular motherboard is full of features that are very useful to the budget computer builder. With its 5.1 Surround Sound and Network connectivity it makes expense a thing of the past.
The only setback with this motherboard is that although it has 4 USB ports they are only the 1.1 specification meaning they can only handle 27Mbps as apposed to the USB 2 specification of 133Mbps. An extra bonus is the SPDIF out port, it is very rare to find this built on to a motherboard. With its ultra powerful AGP 8x Graphics Card Slot and DDR400 Memory Slots the performance on this motherboard is first class.
All the features on this motherboard are without words exceptional, including its non DOS Flashing utility to upgrade the BIOS support. Allowing you to ...
Advantages: pretty cheap Disadvantages: incompattable with many systems
Everything seemed to be going my way while installing an AsusA7V8X-X until the time came to actually install my OS. It kept freezing over and over, and I noticed that this specific board was not able to properly run DDR400 ram in conjunction with my Athlon XP 2600+ that has a 333 FSB. Indeed, the manual suggests using only DDR333 with a 333 FSB... but the problems only got worse from there. It kept on refusing to run, sending me straight to the BIOS and suggesting to verify that my DDR333 ram was really 333 MHz, which it was. Several sticks of RAM later, I removed it entirely and got my money back. I was able to find several complaints on the net regarding the A7V8X-X's notorious pickiness on RAM, and that even with the ASUS recommended Kingston RAM installed, it might STILL misread your DDR333 as running a 331 MHz chip and refuse to ...
