The Asus Eee Box B202 is not a PC in the standard sense of the word! It is, what is known as, a net top PC. It has no DVD Drive, is very low on processing power and has very low Hard Drive space. Ok, for the good. The ASUS Eee Box B202 is almost silent even when running at full throttle. It’s very thin; stream line design makes it very attractive but does hinder it. It also has a bracket allowing it to screw into the VESA mounting holes on the back of any standard monitor, which means its great on space saving. It has a built in N WI-FI card meaning no dongle needed so again you gain on space! It has a gigabit Ethernet port. This PC has one of the lowest power consumption seen so far at almost 17W while idle, meaning that this PC is very Eco-Friendly, so not only do you gain on space but on cash too. The gift that keeps on giving? It runs on XP fairly well but due to the Ram shortage, not brilliantly. So they have installed a second operating system that works as a secondary operating system. This is a LINUX front – end program that you can boot to instead of Windows called Express Gate. Express Gate boots in under 30 seconds and allows you to comfortably play with your Photos, chat, use SKPE and use the net, all be it in a non Windows environment. The bad, but not so ugly. Firstly in Windows XP this computer struggles with the most mundane of tasks. If you open more than say two windows, you start to notice lag in what you’re doing. This is due to the Single – Core Atom processer and the 1 GB RAM. Its next letdown is its Hard Drive space, at only 80 GB you barley have room for a music collection let alone a Film one. So all in all this is a more academic machine than a Media/ Gaming one. The PC is extremely cheap but mot the cheapest in its range, and given what its lacking it really should be. There are much better and cheaper, far be it bigger, uglier and not so Eco – Friendly PC’s out there. Conclusion. All in all not at all good really, the bad far outweighs the good. This I feel is a good computer to have for soy a surf and word-process only internet cafe of in a library or maybe a student but, under no circumstances, most defiantly not for the general home, work, play scenario.
