Having recently set up a new business, I invested in a sturdy laptop to be my main business machine. However, I had an old work laptop sitting around and a dealer was doing an offer to part exchange your old laptop in for a new one. I had been investigating netbooks as a viable travel companion and the Asus came out as a winner.
It was between this and the Acer alternative - however the Asus was cheaper and I am reliable informed that Asus actually make a lot of the insides to all the other netbooks. What really sealed the deal for me though was the battery life. As the Asus is operating Windows XP, it doesn't require a huge memory and lots of power to chug through the tiresome engaging of all the relevant services.
I bought the Asus just before a trip to the UK for a conference and this conference was a true test of the claimed 9 hour battery life. I have to say I was very impressed - claiming 9 hours meant really only 7 hours max, which was still way more than any other netbook. I fired it up at 9am and on one charge it lasted me until 6pm, the entire first day of the conference - very impressed. Second day, it only lasted until 4pm, but nevertheless, we are talking between 7-9 hours of battery life and that is constantly hibernating and coming back on etc. Battery life is monumental.
It's size is perfect as well, I am a big guy with big hands and fingers and I can quite comfortably type away on the key board with no issues. The tracking pad is easy to use, although the only issue with it, is that, like the iphone, you can resize and scroll by using two fingers on the pad. Sometimes though it is overly sensitive and whilst you are trying to scroll down a webpage, you end up minimising it to a level where it is no longer legible. Then trying to guess how much you need to move your fingers in order to resize it, usuallly ends up with the page then magnified 300%. That is really the only complaint of the Asus.
As a netbook it is fantastic, you can quite easily take care of all the necessities whilst travelling - it has enough RAM to cope with multitasking. Having said this if you are watching a video in the background as well as changing between your various applications it can bit a bit slow and jerky. But it was never designed as a media machine. For surfing the net, crunching numbers in excel, blogging or composing a PDF or Word document, the Asus is more than capable.
Having been used to carrying anything from a 15-19 inch laptop around for business for the last 10 years, it is an absolute delight to pick up the Asus, put it in my hand luggage and travel, whether that be on a plane to another country, or to the nearest starbucks to jump on their Wi-Fi, when the cleaner is in.
