With Quad PCI-E graphics, the ASUS P5K64 WS is a solid foundation for any workstation system. Powered by the P35 chipset from Intel and offering Quad Core support, the P5K64 WS... more...offers the perfect solution.
Advantages: Easy overclocking, well laid out, packed with features Disadvantages: One IDE port, expensive.
6600 model for example defaults at 2.4Ghz but even an overclocking novice with aircooling could quite easily get one of these chips to 3Ghz and the performance increase is quite amazing. However to get it there you need an expensive board as very few of the cheap ones can produce high overclocks.
This is where the AsusP5K range come in. They are the high end Asus boards taking over the 975 and 965 chipset boards with the all new P35 chipset. It is arguable that the new chipset doesn't actually offer anything over the 965 chipset in terms of overclocking but what the P35 does give you is the compatibility with new faster processors soon to be released. Clearly seeing as the prices of high end 975 and 965 boards are roughly the same as the P5K Deluxe it makes sense to aquire a little future proofing too.
The board itself is packed ...
-6400 RAM to 1066MHz, which increased speed a little in some applications, and gave a drastic improvement in certain performance benchmarks. The board comes with on-board Wi-Fi, which reduces the need to buy and install another expansion card. The board certainly isn't one of the cheapest available, but the little touches and the on-board Wi-Fi that Asus has included somewhat justify this price. If you plan to overclock a Core 2 Duo/Quad a lot, this board is perfect, but if you're content with stock speed or small overclocks, you can find motherboards that are more economical for you. The P5Kseries has many cheaper variants, lacking some of the high-end features of the Premium, such as the P5K-E, which is cheaper and will suit less demanding consumers, or those who don't need on-board Wi-Fi. Inevitably, the cheaper boards are outperformed by ...
Advantages: Cooling, Upgrades, BIOS updates, Stability Disadvantages: ASUS website is cumbersome at times
I have now owned this motherboard for over a year. I have upgraded the CPU from a dual core to a quad core pentium, I have doubled the ram from 2 to 4Gb, I am currently running 4 SATA HDD's 2 in a RAID0 configuration and I am about to upgrade the graphics card to a dual crossfire X1900.
All in all this PC runs everything I have ever thrown at it and has never failed me. It has been a joy to setup, easy to configure and simple to run and update.
Don't listen to people who complain about unstable bios. The bios on my PC has been faultless.
I am seriously considering getting another of these and building a second PC with the bits from my first, then upgrading my main PC again.
All in all, the perfect motherboard for gamers and graphic designers alike.
The only negative I have about it is ASUS themselves. Their website is ...
