In a world where server virtualisation and remote login is becoming increasingly common, it's all too easy to forget the humble KVM (Keyboard/Video/Mouse) which allows a single keyboard, monitor and mouse to control two or more PCs. For home users with a number of PCs or small to medium sized businesses, there's still a need to control multiple machines from one place without cluttering the place up with all the related paraphernalia. Furthermore, KVMs remove some of the security risks that can arise when enabling remote access.
Here at home I have various PCs I use for testing, editing and so on so I was pleased to get my hands on a new 4 port KVM from Aten. The Masterview CS1774 is rather more than the basic units you might find at PC World though - it has a number of interesting and useful features over and above the basic ability ...

I swear to honest god that me and Smarties were made especially for me, I love them to death, well apart from the side effects, the fact that after you have aten a tube, your lips with be as multi coloured as the rainbow. But I do have just one quite for the company who makes them, why the hell did they stop putting them in circular tubes, opposed to the current five sided tube. When I was younger and far more immature, I loved flipping off the lid, especially if I was aiming at something, and more often than not, and someone.
I will say this though, when they went under improvements, the tubes did get bigger, but on the down side, they took out the blue ones, which were one of my favourites. The good news though, is that the blue smarties are back, and I particularly love the advert to make people aware of this.

ATEN's economy LCD KVM console, CL1000M, offers a space-saving, streamlined approach to IT environments by integrating a keyboard, 17" LCD monitor, and touchpad in a 1U Slide away housing. The LCD display is built into the cover; the keyboard and touchpad are built into the base. Setup is fast and easy. There is no software to configure, no installation routines, and no incompatibility problems. Slide the console module section out; flip the cover up; and you are ready to go to work. When finished, flip the cover down and slide the console module away back into the rack. There is no better way to save time and money than with a CL1000M installation. By using the CL1000M to manage your installation, you: (1) save all the space those standard components, keyboard, mouse, and monitor, would take up; (2) eliminate the expense of having to purchase a separate keyboard, monitor, and mouse for each computer if attaching to a KVM switch; (3) take advantage of upgrading your current system, since CL1000M is compatible with all types of KVM switches; (4) save time for installation. Just connect the cable between CL1000M and a KVM or a computer, and the CL 1000M is ready to serve you.
