Virus control on your PC has become absolutely essential these days, there are so many potential dangers that protecting your computer and your personal information has become quite a lucrative business for some companies.
There are so many applications available that choosing can be as big a nightmare as the virus themselves can be. Many companies charge a fortune for their software protection and more for updated virus protection files, however in the turmoil that is virus protection there is some light at the end of the tunnel…………………..and what is even better is that this light is free.
Grisoft are the publishers of AVG and free and easily downloaded anti -virus program that
protects your PC very well indeed. The Executable installer file can be found at www. grisoft.com and takes but a few minutes of your valuable time to protect your even more valuable PC and the info it contains.
Once installed the program is very easy to use and has a quite extensive help library to assist anyone wishing to delve deeper into the virus database, There are basically six parts to the software each of which can be turned off should the user desire. It is however not advisable to do any such thing since the virus writers these days are very clever and any door left open for entry onto your PC can usually be forced wider open for complete access by any of these despicable sources.
The six mains sub programs of the software are
1. Resident Shield
This part of the program runs in the background and uses very little of your computers resources to complete its tasks very effectively. It raises a small icon in the system tray which can be used to control the activities of the package. Should a virus attack attempt to infiltrate your PC this part of the software is the business end and will eliminate any threat. I say any threat but as I briefly touched on before the virus writers are crafty blighters and I do not believe that ANY anti-virus package can fully claim to be 100% effective. This however comes extremely close and for a fee of 0p can't be bad value can it.
2. E-mail Scanner
This part is pretty much self explanatory………………any incoming e-Mail is scanned and cleaned before it is placed in your inbox. This utility can be customised to the users specifications if required, as can most of the modules.
3. Internal virus database
Every so often AVG will connect to the internet and update the virus detection files, this can be done automatically or manually depending on the users preferences. The internal database will store this file and use it to further protect your system against attack.
4. Scheduler
This module allows you to schedule virus scans of you PC at a chosen time, best selected for a time when use of the PC is at a minimal.
5. Update manager
The update manager allows the user to select from a menu of choices the procedures to be used during the updates of the AVG files.
6. Shell extension
This part of the program is resident whilst the user is using Internet explorer to protect against malicious content whist browsing.
I have been using AVG for a few months now since my previous application required a substantial influx of funds to continue its use. I opted for this on the advice of a friend at work and I have no negative points to relay about this software as of yet. In fact on installation I ran a virus check and it found several threats that my previous program had failed to detect so I am more than pleased with the package. AVG can be upgraded to the plus package for a nominal fee and although as of yet I have not felt the need to update to this level should the program continue to impress I might just consider doing so.
Whilst your are downloading AVG there is an option to download another program called Ewido as a trial version of anti malware. I did so and it detected many problems with my system which it rapidly sorted out. It comes on a 30 day trial and I would advise giving it a go even if it is just to clean your system out of all those spy ware programs that have a tendency to get in no matter what protection one has.
I have been more than pleased with the protection I have gained from downloading this package so if you think your PC might be suffering from a little virus you could do a damn sight worse than try this out. Another benefit is that should you decide to not wish to use this in the future it is easily removed from your PC unlike Symantic programs which can cause umpteen problems when you decide to get rid of them.
Which ever package you decide to use I hope you have continued use of your PC and than the poor blighter is fortunate enough to have an owner that is prepared to protect it the way it deserves.

A very informative review and I shall certainly download it because I've just paid out good money to have a real nasty removed from my PC. And AVG is free!
Advantages: All-in-one package, Good graphics,Effective spam killer.Updates sent as per instructions Disadvantages: Slows down my system too much, possible conflict with Windows XP Sevice Pack 2, let in 4 Trojans, a gap exists between turning on the PC and it activating, problematic install.
