Laurell K Hamilton is the New York Bestselling author of the 'Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter' series, and this, the 'Merry Gentry' series. It is the second book of the latter series I will be reviewing.
The first book, A Kiss of Shadows, we are introduced to Meredith 'Merry' NicEsus, a faerie princess fled from home, hiding in Los Angeles and working as a Private Investigator. But her Aunt Andais, the Queen of Air and Darkness, found her and summoned her back home. She is now in a race against time with her wicked cousin Cel to produce a child; the first to conceive will be named heir to the Unseelie throne. Merry is given a cadre of immortal sidhe warriors as bodyguards and lovers, so it's a fun, erotic, magical romp through the weird and wonderful world of Faerie.
The Book ********
The story begins soon after the events of A Kiss of Shadows. It is December, and Merry and her lovers/bodyguards have returned to Los Angeles, where she has resumed working for the Grey Detective Agency and several of the guards have also joined the payroll.
Merry is approached by Maeve Reed, who was once the Goddess Conchenn before her exile from the Seelie Court and now a famous Hollywood actress. Maeve seeks Merry's aid to perform a fertility rite that will enable her to have a child with her dying human husband. In return, she tells our heroine that the reason she was exiled was that she had refused to become the wife of Taranis, King of Light and Illusion, because she believed him to be sterile.
Galen, badly injured by the demi-fey, has yet to heal, despite the usually phenomenal healing abilities of a sidhe warrior, and because of his injury he and Merry have not been able to quench the heat they've both been feeling since Meredith hit puberty. Merry approaches the Queen of the Demi-Fey, Niceven, regarding a cure, to which the price is an alliance and a weekly drink of Merry's blood by a 'surrogate' chosen by Niceven.
During Merry's first night in bed with Doyle, they are interrupted by Andais, who reveals that the 'Nameless' has been freed. The worst of both courts, the Nameless was the last great spell that Seelie and Unseelie had cooperated upon. They stripped themselves of all the things too awful for them to be permitted to stay in the United States, which formed the Nameless.
A strange murder brings Merry and her 'merry men', acting in her capacity as PI with the Grey Detective Agency, to the scene. However, their presence is challenged by the police, and they are thrown off site, but not before they have a chance to sniff around. Rhys suspects that the lives had been sucked from the murder victims by the ghosts of dead gods. Nothing is said to the police, as the only person who could work such a spell is a sidhe and, if it were discovered, that fact could result in all sidhe being exiled from the US.
I don't want to reveal any more, as I would probably give away the whole plot if I carry on. Filled with political intrigue, the usual assassination attempts and newfound powers, this book is a true page-turner that will keep you up all night.
Conclusion **********
I loved this book, I love all of the books by Laurell K Hamilton. Every one of the characters is believable, you either love them or hate them, depending on which side they're on. The world of Faerie is wonderful, scary, erotic and powerful, and a place you would really love to visit, so long as you had your own set of bodyguards. Obviously, with Merry trying to get pregnant, there is quite a bit of sex in the book, but it's so artfully done that you don't mind, (or at least I didn't), and it furthers the plot in some way or helps in character development. Ms Hamilton has created a wonderful world, and those of you who like horror, fantasy, romance OR mystery (or all four), please take the time to explore it.
