The young girl keeps a notebook and records everything she sees, with disasterous consequences. Another line in the story is the break-up of her parents when her father runs off with her mother's sister. Overall the book is very dark. I have not read a book before where I ... ...the murder. I found it a little confusing but it gets better towards the end. The ending left me feeling as though I had missed something, it was not completely satisfying. Then I suppose it would not of fitted in with the rest of the book if it had been given a happy ending. I would read this book again because it is one of those books where only a second reading will give you deeper understanding.

Also, even though the book is spread out over just one year, the time scale changes frequently. The story begins with the murder then goes into the marriage break-up which happened before the murder. I found it a little confusing but it gets better towards the end. The ending left me feeling as though I had missed something, it was not completely satisfying. Then I suppose it would not of fitted in with the rest of the book if it had been given a happy ending. I would read this book again because it is one of those books where only a second reading will give you deeper understanding.
