When Nick Johnstone got drunk for the first time at the age of 14 he discovered a cure for the depression and anxiety that had been humming in his head since childhood. Over the next ten years he drank to overcome shyness to make the world bearable to get through the days and to get through the nights. He also began to cut himself and he began to lie. Intelligent sensitive from a loving family neither he nor his countless doctors phychiatrists councellors and therapists could understand where his disorders came from. Then when he was 24 he was admitted into hospital. Stripped of his cure" Nick Johnstone painfully began the process of recovery. Although love proves to be the strongest "cure" of all this is a story with no tidy or happy endings."
Advantages: Nick Hornby Disadvantages: There are only 31 songs !
...about how he relates to songs and how they relate to him. For those of you that don't know Nick Hornby or his work then please understand that he is a BIG music fan. Like really. Music is very important to him, almost like a best friend.
I am a huge Nick Hornby fan and own all his books. I don't read a great deal but have discovered in Nick Hornby my ideal author. He writes books that are easy to read (as I already said), full of humour but most importantly he writes about life. He writes in such a way that I feel like he is writing about me. Now it could be that me and Nick have had similar life's (I don't think we have) or it could simply be the fact that we are similar characters and look at things the same (probably true) but I simply love all of his work and '31 Songs' is no exception.
At only 230 pages it is a shortish book...

...to have a look.
The children went off by themselves, scanning the shelves avidly for anything they haven’t yet read. Amy came back with her arms full of books, and looked rather forlorn when she was told to choose 1. [Bless her]
James on the other hand came back with just 1. It was a bright pink book, with bright writing in red, blue and yellow. There was a picture of a bowl of cereal, and a ketchup bottle pouring ketchup onto the cereal.
Welcome to “Ketchup on your cornflakes?” by Nick Sharratt.
I looked at the book, and flicked through the pages. All the pages are split into 2 width ways, with a picture on the top page, and a different picture on the bottom page. There are about 4 words on each of the top and bottom pages.
“Don’t you think this is a bit young for you James?” I asked.
“No!” Came the reply.
“There isn...

Advantages: Original story and quirky interesting characters Disadvantages: Main characters are teenagers so may not appeal to more mature readers
...This urban fantasy centres around the character of 16 year old Imogene, who together with her mother and brother Jared move to the town of Newford in order for their mother to 'find herself'. Imogene and Jared have to start attending their new school Redding High, and while Jared settles in right away, Imogene finds things a little more difficult.
On Imogene's first day at school she decides to make friends with Maxine, a loner at Redding High. Imogene also manages to ruffle the feathers of the leader of the most powerful clique in school and head cheerleader Valerie. Maxine is pretty much a loner and just tries to stay off the radar of the bullies. Unfortunately for Maxine, as her controlling mother tries to direct every area of her life even down to the clothes she wears, this is not always easy.
Imogene has a pretty bad...
