From Neanderthal to Blair - A British History

Advantages: A humorously irreverent look at British history.
Disadvantages: None for me. Too English for some?

*** The Author *** Sean Lang studied history at Oxford, has written conventional history books and reviewed textbooks in The Times Educational Supplement. He has been teaching history for over twenty years in schools and university, and he thanks his students for helping to inspire him to write this entertaining history book, which is not the kind usually found in school. Other ?For Dummies? books by this engaging historian that I intend to read are European History and Twentieth Century History. *** Who Would Appreciate It? *** I believe that the readers who would appreciate this book most will have the sort of basic knowledge of British history gained by completing a British secondary school education, even if they thought history lessons were tedious and didn?t pay much attention. I would hope this book would ...

Bite Into British History

Advantages: Concise, fully-indexed, history of Britain.
Disadvantages: Not as enjoyable or inclusive as British History for Dummies.

The Author Judy Parkinson seems to be on a crusade to help us learn and remember academic facts. In August 2007 it was through the release of her book "i before e". Then in October 2008 her book Remember, Remember (The Fifth of November) was published. Her newest effort Spilling the Beans on the Cat's Pyjamas: Popular Expressions - What They Mean and How We Got Them is due in the shops in September 2009. Contents In Remember, Remember, the author has broken down British history into A5 sized, one page chunks, with a new heading for each. The individual pages are bought together into the following chapters: Roman Britain, The Dark Ages, The Late Middle Ages, Tudor Britain, Stuart Britain, Georgian Britain, Victorian Britain, Edwardian Britain, The First World War Years, The Inter-War Years ...

Review of Remember, Remember (The Fifth of November): The History of Britain in Bite-Sized Chunks - Judy Parkinson

A history not so dark

Advantages: Accessible, interesting, a lesser-studied area
Disadvantages: A few editing issues

his legitimacy was never established, and when his son died in infancy, the Dudley line died out, not long after the Tudor line had similarly expired. Wilson's text suffers a bit from lack of editing (lots of mis-placed commas, occasional typos in word choice and spelling), but on the whole is engaging and accessible, and certainly illuminating toward a family otherwise lesser known and little studied. There are genealogical charts showing descendants as well as alliances, photographic plates with images of the Dudleys and places of interest, a good collection of notes, bibliographic references, and a reasonable index. This book straddles the fence between being a popular history and an academic history, edging more toward the popular. I enjoyed reading this book thoroughly, and recommend it to any interested in British history ...
