Julius Caesar
Review of Julius Caesar - William Shakespeare by  Gwino

Advantages: deep meaning, excellent character development, many links between various parts of the play
Disadvantages: language

...Julius Caesar is a play written by William Shakespeare thought to have been written in the very late 16th century. Despite being titled "Julius Caesar", the protagonist of the play is actually Marcus Brutus. The play takes us through the build-up and the aftermath of Caesar's assassination on the Ides of March, and gives great insight into the mindset and philosophies of the stoic Brutus. Julius Caesar is a play that is very deep, and the characters are developed extremely well. The audience/reader is able to appreciate the reasons why the conspirators went through with their plan, and Shakespeare shares with us the different thoughts between the two main conspirators Brutus and Cassius. In fact, since all the main characters are so well developed, it is possible to compare and contrast between any of the major characters in this play... Read review

Sensory overload in Venice
Review of A Thousand Days in Venice - Marlena di Blasi by  fizzytom

Advantages: Great food writing, delicious recipes, interesting factual stuff
Disadvantages: Not enough recipes; overly flowery descriptions; unappealing characters

..., history and customs of the Venetians and the author manages to incorporate these facts into her account of the romance quite naturally without interrupting the main event. However, what space she saved by including only a small number of recipes, de Blasi manages to cram with adjectives, lists and metaphors. They are everywhere, piled one on top of the other like an antiquarian bookstore where you think there could be an imminent catastrophe. In describing things on a market stall it is not enough for her to mention six when a dozen could be named. De Blasi tells us about the fabrics with which she drapes every item of furniture in the apartment, the various luxurious cushions of every hue she couldn't come to Venice without, the various fabrics offered up for her wedding dress design...and so it went on. It got worse: sometimes... Read review
