1900. Andrew Roberts, Wolfson History prizewinner and superb narrative historian, has been inspired by Churchill's example to write the story of the 20th century.. In his preface Churchill wrote: 'Every nation or group of nations has its own tale to tell. Knowledge of the trials and struggles is necessary to all who would comprehend the problems, perils, challenges, and opportunities which confront us today ?It is in the hope that contemplation of the trials and tribulations of our forefathers may not only fortify the English-speaking peoples of today, but also play some small part in uniting the whole world, that I present this account.' As the greatest of all the trials and tribulations of the English-speaking peoples took place in the twentieth century, Roberts' book covers the four world-historical struggles in which the English-speaking peoples have been engaged - the wars against German Nationalism, Axis Fascism, Soviet Communism and now the War against Terror. But just as Churchill did in his four volumes, Roberts also deals with the cultural, social and political history of the English global diaspora - comprising the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand and the West Indies. Keeping to Churchill's definition it does not cover India, where there are 180 languages of which English is only that of the elite. But India's story overlaps with that of Britain and is fully dealt with in that context.

...of the book there is also a chronology which lists principal literary works alongside "other events." With this we can see that when Barclay wrote his famous Ship of Fools, King Henry VIII was on the throne.
There is also a list of poets laureate from Ben Johnson right through to Andrew Motion and a further list, which covers all major literary awards since1900. Nobel Prize for literature, the Library Association Carnegie Medals and the Booker.
Is the book any good? Yes, it is excellent, in fact. It is of great value to the academic, the writer, the journalist and even to the "ordinary" reader who might recoil at paying £29.99 for this book.
The book was compiled by a team of experts under Margaret Drabble and the exceptionally well-written and clear writing style makes it a genuine pleasure to use, whether for a reference tool or just...

...denominations in England and America owe an incalculable debt to Cranmer's pioneering work.'
Robert Van de Weyer (compiler of many books, including books on Celtic prayers and parables) edited this version of The First English Prayer Book, a compact edition of the 1549 version, laid out in an easily readable and usable format -- the BCP is always meant to be used, and, as the word common indicates, as something done in community -- common to all the people. The BCP can be adapted and very useful for private devotions, but the first and main intent is to gather, sustain and strengthen people in community. Spellings have be regularised for a modern audience, and some minor grammatical changes have also been incorporated.
Van de Weyer has also incorporated a brief, six-page introduction, which is one of the better brief summaries of early prayer...

Advantages: A thorough and fascinating history... Disadvantages: Don't try this at home...
...I spend a great deal of my time thinking about cannibalism. Unfortunately I have no formal education in Anthropology and I have little, if any, morbid fascination with madmen and murderers or even the recent Jeffrey Dahmers (that is murderers AND cannibals) of this world. I will also add here that I do not harbour any peculiar notions of having the odd bite myself! However, you will have to forgive me if I refuse to answer any questions as to why exactly I have recently read a book entitled “Cannibal: The History of the People-Eaters”!
I’m not saying, I refuse to be drawn, my lips are sealed (and other sayings…)
What I will say about this book however, is that it certainly does make compelling reading.
It is a Channel 4 publication which was originally produced to go hand-in-hand with a 2001 TV series by the same name. I...
