This was one of my faveourite books when I was a little girl and I have just re-read it at the age of 22 and I love it just as a much now as I did then.
Sara Crewe is a very rich little girl from India who is sent to an exclusive boarding school in London where she is treated as the show pupil. She is given fine clothes and an ornate bedroom with a real tiger skin rug. She even has a maid to herself. All this attention would make most little girls unbearable but Sara is very special. She is always kind to the younger girls and befriends those less fortunate than herself. She even gives the maid Becky some cake and tells her wonderful stories to take her mind off her work.
Then tradgedy strikes as her father dies and leaves her a penniless orphan. She becomes a scullery maid for the boarding house and is treated despicably by Miss Mitchen, the owner of the school. Throughout this Sara always acts like princess and never loses her good nature.
This is a beautiful inspiring book about how you can always be a good kind person inspite of what live throws at you. The ending is a little far fetched but don't forget that this is book written for children so you can't expect gritty realism!
I will always love this book and would recommend anyone who hasn't read it to read it as soon as they can.
