Freedom. A good deal of this autobiography was written secretly while Mandela was imprisoned for 27 years on Robben Island by South Africa's apartheid regime. Among the book's interesting revelations is Mandela's ambivalence toward his lifetime of devotion to public works. It cost him two marriages and kept him distant from a family life he might otherwise have cherished. Long Walk to Freedom also discloses a strong and generous spirit that refused to be broken under the most trying circumstances--a spirit in which just about everybody can find something to admire. --Amazon.com

Manufacturer's product description
Since his release from prison in 1990, Nelson Mandela has emerged as the world's most potent moral leader since Gandhi. The foster son of a Tembu chief, Mandela grew up straddling two worlds: the traditional culture of his tribe and the hostile reality of a white-dominated nation-state. His pivotal role in the anti-apartheid movement led to a life underground and imprisonment for his political beliefs and activities. A triumphant sequence of events then followed which climaxed in April 1994, with the appointment of Mandela not only as the first-ever black South African president, but as the first man to govern a democratic, multi-racial South African society. This work is Mandela's own account of his and his country's epic journey. Abridged and illuminated with dramatic photographs, this deluxe edition chronicles the man, his land and his people.
Advantages: Gives a great insite into the life of a great man Disadvantages: Lots of names which are hard to pronounce and hard to remember
...I found this book very interesting but hard going to read. There were so many unusual names in it to remember. On reading the book I started off well but as I got into it I found that there were so many unusual names of people he had contact with that it was hard to remember them all while progressing through the book. I found that I had to put it down half-way through and go back to it at a later
This book gives great insite into the life of NelsonMandela from his early years struggling to his time in prison and after his release. I found it very interesting as it showed how he and others had to live and keep their political convictions hidden for fear of imprisonment. date.
NelsonMandela achieved so much in his life if you can perservere to the end it is well worth the read....

Advantages: An insight into a Great Man! Disadvantages: Uncertainty about pronouncing nouns
...in relative ignorance of the discriminatory regime under which he lived but who soaked up knowledge and eventually transformed into a dignified leader of all peoples who respected the human rights of others - irrespective of the colour of their skin. He was and still is never complacent about what had to be achieved and what needed to be done to hang on to all incremental gains. No matter how minor.
NelsonMandela cared not only for the dignity, respect and lives of his peoples, the oppressed, but also for the souls of the oppressors. The book ends with the line '..I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom comes responsilities, and I dare not linger, for my longwalk is not yet ended.' This book has reminded / motivated me to not give up. Although from time to time I might take a rest from live's trials and tribulations, that rest...
