Williams' use of violence
Review of A Streetcar Named Desire - Tennessee Williams by  nicolemorgan

Advantages: see op
Disadvantages: see op

.... The quarrel that occurs between Steve and Eunice, similar to those that occur in the downstairs flat of Stanley and Stella, is brief and soon “she [Eunice] is sobbing luxuriously and he [Steve] is cooing love-words.” Williams suggests that violence is common within relationships in this working-class community of New Orleans. He makes links throughout the play between sex and violence and makes the suggestion that violent behaviour, such as that illustrated by Stanley and Stella, can be a form of foreplay that initiates passion and sex. Scene VI was particularly controversial in the original theatre production of A Streetcar Named Desire as it included not only violence but also the theme of homosexuality. During the scene Blanche tells Mitch of her husband’s suicide for which she feel’s responsible. In the play, Blanche openly reveals... Read review

Conflict and Tension
Review of A Streetcar Named Desire - Tennessee Williams by  loz989

Advantages: exciting play
Disadvantages: poor acting can spoil the story line

...For those of you who know this play will understand that it is crawling with hidden meanings, symbolism and metaphors. I am studying this play at AS Level English Literature and am thoroughly enjoying it. The hidden depths, which are lyers thick, make essay writing a hard and time consuming task! But it has to be done! I watched this play the other day at theatre in Norwich and I have to say that watching the play ruined my image of what i thought the play would be like, i was much happier with my own imagination to be honest! But it was interesting to see how the director interpreted it. It has been said that Williams deliberately sets up a pattern on tension and conflicts in the play, which culminate in the ending. Do you agree? In “A Streetcar Named Desire” by Tennessee Williams, Williams employs a number... Read review

A streetcar named desire
Review of A Streetcar Named Desire - Tennessee Williams by  whitestarr

Advantages: very deep, emotional, beautifully written
Disadvantages: none

...This is my favourite play ever! Tennessee Williams is a true fighter (as implied in his name) and shows us how unjust society really is. This play is a lament for the dream the genteel Old South, the illusion of which Blanche tries to uphold, but fails miserably. It is a song of mourning for all the delicate moths in our world - not a flamboyant as their butterfly counterparts, regarded as pests by society and totally incapable of protecting their fragile wings from the burning lamp. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in American literature, anyone who has read any of Tennessee Williams' previous plays and enjoyed it, and anyone who has a profound love for literature in general (particularly if you are interested in pyscology as well). It is a must read. PS: Whatever you do, don't be put off by the name of this film... Read review
